They are dedicated source and recirculating source. The decision to choose which type of water source will depend on the size and the overall water capacity of the fountain.
Recirculating Water Source
The residential and the office fountains are equipped with recirculating water pump. This pump helps to recirculate the water through the fountain. The recirculating pump fountains have basin of water at the base of the fountain structure called the catch basin or the reservoir. The pump is placed on the basin. This pump keeps the water circulating through the fountain allowing the fountain to be placed in an area without adjacent source. It is necessary to replenish the water in the basin once a week or every two days. The reason is that the fountains are natural humidifiers, that keep the room cool . It is recommended to add water everyday than a large quantity of water less frequently.

Large fountains that are found in the public gardens and pool edges usually have dedicated water source just for the fountain. This is because , the fountains would need gallons and gallons of water as per the weather conditions. However , in ordinary homes this would cost a fortune.
