Your Questions About Landscape Timbers

Nancy asks…

How much does a landscape timber cost?

Suntan answers:

Pressure treated or not treated? It doesn’t cost much, but get the treated. Without treatment, you’ll attract termites.

Daniel asks…

I was just outside hammering in a 6 inch nails to my landscape timbers, all of a sudden I lost my feeling?

My right arm lost its feeling, for a short time now its tightning up in spots on my arm, could i have done something to it while I was pounding in those nails. It feels like tightning of my arm now.

Suntan answers:

Probably because you hammared so hard, the impact went through your arm.
Or you probably tore a ligament.
My sugesstion is that if it hurts within a few days, or if you still don’t have feeling, i would go to the hospital right away, just to make sure.

Betty asks…

Can someone give me a step-to-step guide as to how I would build a bench from landscaping timbers?

Suntan answers:

Are you sure you want to do that? Landscape timbers wouldn’t make a very comfortable bench, I wouldn’t think (sturdy as all get-out, though).

Here is a nice plan for a easy-to-build simple bench:

Helen asks…

How do you miter a landscape timber?

The timber is flat on the top and round on the sides making it impossible to get an accurate cut the first time. Any tricks?

Suntan answers:

A 12″ miter saw will make the cut. Set the niter, and clamp in place. When using these timbers, make sure you spike/ rebar them securely, they’re notorious for warping.

Nancy asks…

how much should i be getting charged for landscape work?

I want someone to help me design and build the landscape around my house. The area around my house is about 400 sq/ft that I want done.

I know the cost of the materials i want to use mainly landscape timbers. and black mulch. a couple of ferns and trees.

I don’t know what a far price for the design or the labor would be.

Any help would be appreciated

Suntan answers:

$100 for the design $50 a hour for the labor..It all depends on who you contract, but that would be my rate..

Robert asks…

Anyone ever try to restore landscaping timbers?

I have landscaping timbers in front of my house that are cca that are starting to gray and look ugly. Just wondering if anyone has ever tried to stain them with like deck stain rather than replacing them. They are structurally good just starting to look ugly.
Thanks

Suntan answers:

Because these timbers are treated just like any other lumber you can use deck wash to restore them and if you want coat them the same way you would a deck.

Steven asks…

Will white mold on landscape timber ruin my crops?

I have a small vegetable raised bed made out of landscape timbers, and when I tilled the soil I noticed white mold (or some other fungus) has grown on the wood. Will that affect my crops this year? What causes it to grow?

Suntan answers:

I doubt it wil hurt your plants. Most fungus or fungi are harmless to plants, some even help your plants to grow better. The only harm your white mold will probably do is to decay your wood (meaning you may eventually have to do “patch work”, or replace oyur box). Fungi help to break down plant matter into a form palnts can use again, fungi also release CO2 (the chemicla plant need to survive) and consume oxygen (plants make this).

Nancy asks…

II need a pattern for a farm tractor, planter made out of landscape timber. Has anyone seen one of these?

I have a picture. It is about 3 feet long and 2.5 feet high with a planter where the motor and seat would be. It is made out of landscape timber. I’d be happy to pay for it if I could just find where to buy it.

Suntan answers:

Try a company named U-Bild or U-bild It.. They have tons of simple plans and patterns like these.

Chris asks…

Are landscape timbers a good option for flower bed edging? Could they invite termites?

Suntan answers:

Having work with a landsaper for 6 years now i have heard this asked many times. Landscape timbers are a good cheap way to edge a flower bed. I would recommend trying to find green treated timbers if possible. They are a little more costly but last a good 20+ years. Termites are a factor i would not worry about. Never had problems with them. Another way that is cheaper and looks better in my opinion is a natural trench border. Simply dig a trench about 5 inches wide and 6 inches deep all around the bed.. If using mulch or some other form of ground cover go ahead and lay down the ground cover and fill in the trench with it. You can now mow all the way up to the edge and never have to worry about termites.

Linda asks…

Do I use a Plate Compactor before I install Landscape Timbers for a gravel driveway?

I’m doing a small contained gravel driveway for my boat on the side of my garage. I have leveled the area with topsoil. I know I have to use a plate compactor to compact the soil. Do I install the 6″x6″ railroad ties/landscape timbers before adding the gravel? Or do I add the gravel, compact it, then install the timbers? I’m worried that if I add the ties, then add the gravel, then compact, I’d disturb the timbers. The timbers will be secured into the ground using 1/2″ thick 24″ long re-bar. Thanks in advance!

Suntan answers:

Compact gravel, add timbers. I would consider sand over and between the gravel to make it more sturdy. Tamp that too.

Sandra asks…

How can I build a bench out of landscaping timbers?

We are wanting to make my Dad a bench out of landscaping timbers for Father’s Day… anyone know of a book or step by step guide we can follow? Thank you!!!!

Suntan answers:

Landscaping timbers are not a good choice. They are cut from material that is not suitable to make structural lumber. They are not meant to support any weight. Would hate to see poor Dad land on his butt.
