Your Questions About Landscape Stones Rocks

October 14th, 2011 by Suntan

Susan asks…

******Stone Landscaping prices???******?

Okay, I have a large yard & it has grass right now, but it is hard to handle. With maintenance, watering, etc….So I have been wanting to get rocks. But I am unsure of the price. How do they charge?? Just ball park the price…thanks.

Suntan answers:

You can start by putting down a layer of cheap crush and run and then a layer of something more attractive. The place where I buy sells regular sharp edged gravel by the cubic yard. 40 bucks for plain. Colors increase that by about 10 bucks. One thing I have found to be true is that the smoother, the more expensive. My place sells boulders by the pound.

John asks…

is teppie slate (araal) safe for aquarium?

i just wanna ask you guys if teppie stone is safe to put in a aquarium??? ( rocks used for landscaping ) really need your insights… tnxs

Suntan answers:

It is safe in itself, but if you got it at the landscapers’ it might have been stored near fertilizers or insecticides which would not be safe. You can leave it out exposed to a few rainstorms before using it in the aquarium, if you think it might have other landscaping products on it.

Daniel asks…

Where the Stone Roses the British pop equivalent to USA Pixies?

Pixies spawned many bands from their sound… Garage blues indie rock… Kurt Cobain had been known to say that his band, Nirvana, was nothing more than a Pixies cover band…

Stone Roses… Spawned Brit pop from thier sound… Pulp, Oasis, The Verve… It has been said that The Verve met at a Stone Roses show…

These two bands, oceans apart, helped form musical movements of the early/late 1990′s (America- Grunge/garage rock/indie… Britian- Brit pop, shoegazer, indie)… Are they the same in that manner? Whose is your fav- Pixies or Stone Roses? WHo has done more to the musical landscape?

Suntan answers:

Stone Roses and Pixies were, no doubt,an awesome bands. But my fave.of this period (may be a little bit earlier) were The Jesus And Mary Chain. If Nirvana was a Pixies cover band, then Stone Roses was a Jesus… Cover band.(It’s only my personal opinion).
P.S. Good and serious question.Thanks.

Your Questions About Landscape Stones Cost

October 4th, 2011 by Suntan

Laura asks…

Any suggestions on how to save $ landscaping front yard, paving and making sidewalks…???

As we are on a fixed budget but do need some work done and would like to keep this project as a DIY job, but don’t want to go broke doing it. This house has no garage, and only small stones in driveway, lawn is bare, no grass in some patches but has rose bushes, trees and some small plants…need all the info i can get, and what’s more cost effective? stone walk ways? brick, concrete? asphalt driveways? what shrubs make good walls? any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Suntan answers:

You have to be careful buying grass seed. The cheaper stuff is most likely annual grass and will die after the season.
Check your local stores (walmart, kmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s etc) frequently. When a plant is past it’s bloom time, they will often mark them down half price. You won’t be able to enjoy the plant this year, but next year you’ll have beautiful flowers and shrubs at half the cost.
Concrete is expensive, but cheaper than asphalt. Cost will depend on how much you need.
Shrubs that make good walls are Forsythia, Rose of Sharon, and most types of evergreen.

Thomas asks…

What is the best way to build/pour concrete or stone steps to a patio door?

My darling hubby and I are planning on pouring a concrete slab patio. We have a patio door that exits to this patio and needs about a three and a half foot flight of stairs. DH and I are a little confused about the most cost efficient way to construct steps. We want something that will go well with the concrete or patio stones so I don’t believe wood will work very well and we’re not sure exactly how to set up a frame to pour steps, set brick steps or build a frame that we can disguise with patio stones and concrete slab treads. I have enclosed a few links to pictures for the latter of the options. Thank you for any help!

Concrete Steps:

Suntan answers:

I didn’t look at the sites you suggested, but would like to suggest precast concrete steps. They are available at most lumber or masonry supply stores. Three and a half feet is 42″ (about) and the standard step risers are 7 1/2″- 8″, so that would be a cast step of 4-risers, and 4-12″ treads. 8″ from deck to first tread, down three more treads, then 8″ to walkway. (sidewalk) 5 x 8″ = 40″

John asks…

Roughly how much would I be charged, for labor, to landscape my large front and back yard?

I have all the material needed but need to know how much labor alone would cost to clean up a large backyard that hasn’t been touched in 10 years! It’s an overgrown mess covered in weeds. 20 evergreen trees to be trimmed 3ft. from the ground. 2 flower gardens (8ftx10ft) to be made using concrete landscaping blocks (no height) and 2 solar water fountains to be placed. The front yard- to build a retaining wall 2ft high (10ftx15ft) filled with an arrangement of plants and flowers. Mulch and stones to be placed at various areas. There’s much to do.

Suntan answers:

Diana, as I said before, your best bet is to get free estimates from local landscaping companies in your area–contact them, etc. Getting a price guess here on Yahoo, I’m afraid, is not good, as the cost greatly varies by location.

What you need to realize is that, to your advantage, many landscaping contractors are offering free estimates, which is good because that’s the best way to figure out what you can do for your budget and get the most competitive deal around in your area. Here’s a great link to a handyman site that offers free very resourceful information to assist you in determining the cost of your project, and, ultimately, selecting a local landscaping contractor in an effort to get the best deal for you:

Info on local landscaping contractors:

I’m sure you’ll find the information you need, specifically the tips, useful as it relates to being treated fairly by contractors and exploring the consumer-wise approach of getting free written estimates to find the best contractor in your area.

The Internet. Just whatever is available online and what I have on my mind, including the inclusion of relevant sites, like the one cited that came about from my efforts, which is intended to be useful. Helping people get the relevant info they want is great.

Your Questions About Landscape Stones

September 22nd, 2011 by Suntan

William asks…

Is there an easy way to remove stones from around my house?

I would like to plant shrubs around the house, and we have landscape timbers around our house filled with landscape stone about a foot deep and two feet wide. Anyone know of an easy way to remove this? I tried shoveling it but you get very little stone, and way to time consuming. Thanks in advance!

Suntan answers:

I’m having the same problem right now. We bought a new house and there’s construction rock all over the place and it’s especially deep near the house. We’ve resorted to digging (via hand or machine) out the rock to amend the soil for planting.

The only “easy” way to do it is to pay someone else to do it.

Steven asks…

What is the best way to fix sunken landscape stone blocks?

I have landscaping in front of my house outlined by stone blocks (sometimes 2 tiers of blocks, sometimes just one). Over the years they have begun to sink into the ground. What is the best way to make my landscaping look new again with nicely defined borders? I was debating between just buying another layer of blocks to put on top or removing the existing blocks/putting down something/putting the old blocks back. If it were the second method, what would work best to put down – would dirt just sink again? Would something else work better?

Also, I don’t want to damage my existing plants/shrubs so not sure how I would put down new dirt – my plants would be buried if I filled the new border with dirt but would be hidden by the higher borders if I didn’t….

Thanks!

Suntan answers:

If you are just talking about a row of bricks or pavers or landscape blocks, all you need to do is pick them up and put a little sand under them to lift and level them. They settle into the ground due to freezing and thawing of the soil.

Thomas asks…

How should we set up our pool, ontop of landscape stone and sand?

We have an area wear there was a playground set with small with small landscape stone. were going to set up a pool, its 24 foot and above ground, We leveled out the stone so that it as even as can be. Were going to put a tarp above the stone and then sand ontop the tarp And the pool ontop the sand, does anyone think the stone will provide enough support or should remove the stone and use only the sand?

Suntan answers:

Hiya. I assume that the pool is one of the plastic ‘bag’ type with a tubular frame or an ‘easy up frameless plastic.
This being the case I would recommend not putting sand next to the liner as sand can contain sharp bits of stone – instant puncture.
I have had great success using a 1″ polystyrene sheet on top of our york stone patio slabs with the pool on top. We have an ‘Intex’ 12′ round pool.
The polystyrene conforms too, and evens out, the uneven surface of the slabs and ensures a nice soft underlay for the plastic. There are various names this goes by, Jablite is a trading name in the uk and is available from the likes of builders merchants etc. Usual sheet size is 1200x600mm but you can get 8′x4′ sheets (works out cheaper)
What you have to remember is that 1000 ltrs of water weighs 1 metric tonne. My small pool holds 5000 ltrs, so yours would probably double that.
Once you have the pool up, dont forget to start the chemical regime straight away, I used slow release chlorine tablets last year, with shock doses of liquid sodium hypochlorite as required. Keeps the same water in there for the whole season.
Have fun
Brian

Your Questions About Landscape Stones And Rocks

September 11th, 2011 by Suntan

Joseph asks…

Landscaping ideas for my house?

I have a grey house with royal blue shutters and front door. The pillars and the windows are white. I have a huge yard with bushes already planted. I would like to put some rocks throughout the bushes and have some stones to outline the rocks. I don’t know what color rocks and stones I should do. I really want this to stand out. Any suggestions?

Mandy asks…

Gardening advice please……..?

I have a small garden, approximately 7 feet by 1-1/2 feet that I have just planted a couple of azaleas and some heather in. I am also going to be putting in a stepping stone, and then covering the dirt with small white landscape rocks. I want to try and keep the weeds from coming up and am looking for some advice on whether it is better to use a sheet of plastic with small holes punched in it for air, or whether there is a benefit to using landscape fabric instead. Thanks!

Suntan answers:

Landscape fabric will be a lot easier to install and will also let rain water into the soil better than plastic will.

David asks…

Price of landscape stone?

I want to buy some decorative rocks for my yard, and I’m wondering roughly how much it’s going to cost. I want some that are about baseball-sized. What’s an average price I should expect to pay?

Suntan answers:

Here in Louisiana far from any quarry, we have to buy them by the pound and they cost from 25 – 50 cents a pound. The closer you get to where they are found, the cheaper they will be. And if you can pick them up instead of having them delivered, you can save much more money.

Your Questions About Landscape Stones Cost

August 31st, 2011 by Suntan

George asks…

How much does landscaping cost?

Have 6 shrubs and 2 evergreens (these are the height of our ranch house) to remove. Would like the common stone border you see a lot nowadays with about 5 or 6 basic shrubs installed.

Suntan answers:

Removing the trees, probably $100 each. Maybe $200 since they are really big and it will take a long time to chip them.

Stone border $1,500 – $2,000.

Very rough numbers… Call a landscaper, most of them will give free estimates.

Lizzie asks…

how much will it cost to build a small patio?

The patio will be stone and it will be a relatively small one. If you include the cost of flower landscaping…is 16,500 dollars too much?
it’s shaped kinda of like bean. no special features… it has brick surrounding it.

Suntan answers:

I’m not sure it all depends on the size of rock that you are going to use. I think that will be more than enough, but like I said it all depends on the size of rock.

John asks…

Did I get ripped off on the cost of this landscaping job?

I had one 10′ X 5′ and one 5′ X 5′ area next to my house cleared and 6 bushes planted. Then they laid down landscaping cloth and dumped 1/4″ of stone on top of the cloth and put edging around the whole thing. I paid $500. It took two guys 3 hours to do the job. WHat do you think? I live in PA near Philly.

Suntan answers:

I am assuming the $500 included the bushes?

Bushes are actually more expensive then one might think.
I don’t know the actual cost of your items that you had put in.. With rocks, cloth, and bushes..$500 WITH LABOR really doesn’t seem that far off.

Go to home depot- and price these items yourself- it may make you feel better
