Your Questions About Landscape Jobs Colorado

September 13th, 2011 by Suntan

Donald asks…

Moving to Colorado… Where?

I’m graduating college in May and currently enrolled in southern Ill. I’ve been west twice and loved each trip. I will be graduating with a major in photography, and while it may seem like I want to move there just because I want to photograph the landscape.. its not.

What sort of place isn’t too crowded, but still has a younger population where I could fit in easily?

I have just started doing research on the area, and sorts of jobs available. I don’t mind a regular job for awhile outside of photo while I get my feet on the ground as my own person. (I am on the shy side, single, but have always, and willing to work hard for my money..)

Anyway, I feel sorta lost and would like some advice. Ohhh.. and I don’t have money from my parents…..

Suntan answers:

You will LOVE colorado. Ft. Colins is great, One of the best cities in the U.S. To live in. And…the job outlook is far better there than is some other parts of the state.

Lisa asks…

Ecology student wanting to move to Colorado..?

I am a 25 year old from a small Illinois tourist town. I have had many travels, some taking me around the world. As much as I do love my home town, which is in a beautiful area along the Mississippi, with great bluffs, hills and water, which have provided years of hiking, biking, cliff climbing, kayaking, canoeing, camping, etc… But I have thought about Colorado since I was 14. It has always just seemed to be the place to go and do everything I love to do. The only other place that I have picked up and actually moved to was Florida, it was difficult, but eventually worked out great, so I am not afraid of relocating.. I have many friends throughout the state of Colorado so am sure I could spend some time just wandering the state a bit before picking a spot to settle into. My main priority is finding a decent school, I’m studying environmental sciences. The other is that I am thinking of the cost of living out there, how difficult is it to find an outdoor job? I enjoy horticulture and landscaping, which I know is seasonal.. Ideally I know that I would be better off to wait until spring to go, but I want to be there on New Years… So is it impossible to find any enjoyable work in the winter, while the weathers crazy? also, it would be nice to find an area with a nice atmosphere, I am pretty much a guitar, hike, bike, kayak, long board, swim, dive, cave, climb, camp, nature pics, snowboard, garden, music lovin kinda guy and I really do enjoy a good time. ha
So I guess my questions are:
area of good eco school.
outdoor work.
general cost of living.
a place for me….

Suntan answers:

Colorado State University at Ft Collins has a School of Global Environmental Sustainability which might work well for you.

Unemployment is high as is cost of living. Here is a link to CraigsList that will give you an idea of costs and possible jobs

Suntan answers:

I just believe they do care what happens to this country. Not concern about what will be going on in 10 years or what kind of future they are leaving their kids. I still want to ask why is Calif broke ? Why is Calif facing water shortages ? LA has everything the supporters of illegals want, but it doesn’t seem to be doing very well.Nobody can tell me illegals live in shadows in LA ,so why so many problems in LA ?

Your Questions About Landscape Jobs In California

Robert asks…

What are the sunniest and greenest cities in California? Green as in landscape. Like Washington state?

I’m thinking about moving south in late feb for a few month, sick of this rain, I have a telecommute job, so I don’t have to worry about employment.

Suntan answers:

Actually, this is a very interesting question! Normally, I would say your request would be a bit difficult (especially in Summer), but since you’re coming in February . . .

Surprisingly, the coastal cities of California are usually sunnier in the late Fall through early Spring than they are in the Summer, so you’re in luck! I would try around the Mendocino/Fort Bragg area. It’s beautiful country and the weather is quite nice these days. See http://www.discovernortherncalifornia.com/mendocino-county-california.html for more information. (Internet access could be a problem, though if you’re telecommuting).

For telecommuting, I would try further south, but still more coastal than inland (the further inland, the colder & less green,in general) – say Marin County (Sausalito, Mill Valley, Tiburon), Half Moon Bay or Santa Cruz further south.

All that being said, nothing is California is going to be as green as it is in Washington State because we have less rain – the greenest part of the state is Redwood country (from Mendocino County & north) because of the fog there (but the fog is more in the Summer than the Winter).

Hope this helps!

Carol asks…

Your Questions About Landscape Jobs Mn

August 22nd, 2011 by Suntan

Nancy asks…

I’m looking to moved to Minnesota in the next 2 years.?

What is your opinion as to where in MN is the best place to move? Be it landscape, weather, people or jobs.

Suntan answers:

Minnesota is a great place, top of the list for health, jobs, etc. If you get a map, pretty much everything south of the Minneapolis is kind of flat. North it is much more rugged due to the glaciers. If you are going to live in the Minneapolis-St Paul area, I would recommend living just NORTH of the cities if not in the cities. As you go further north, the winters get more and more harsh so keep that in mind. Traffic has greatly increased over the past 30 years so before buying a home, do a test drive from that location to where you will work.

Paul asks…

How to deal with annoying neighbors?

I just moved up north in MN and my new neighbors seemed nice at first but now they are driving me crazy! The husband is an alcoholic and sometimes when he’s drunk he’ll prank call me at night when im sleeping. The teenage twins play paintball in there backyard all the time with there friends when im working on the landscape and sometimes I or my proberty gets hit and they would just run away. The wife thinks im her best friend and she never thinks that i’ll be mad if she “borrows” my stuff like my weed whipper. Also the kids blew fireworks on my proberty while i was at my cabin. And the police aren’t helping me with that problem either. Please help i can’t leave because i moved in my new home for my job because i got transfered.

Suntan answers:

Oooo tough one if your looking for revenge its going to be really hard specially because they have kids… Why not try calling a pizza place and ordering 30 xl pizzas to there house. (try a payphone) or you could try to scare the cr@p out of the kids. And for the wife tell her you baked cookies or something and make them disgusting!!! That would shut them up :)

Lisa asks…

Terrible Townhome Association?

Our homeowners association is terrible. My house looks like it’s abandoned in the front. There’s a shrub (NOT a tree, a SHRUB) that has grown 1+1/2 stories and actually touches my roof! Half of that has blown-down in a storm and is flat on the yard. The rocks from the landscaping have long since escaped the plastic border that once held them in and they’re not contained at all and go into the grass and sidewalk.
Then there’s the service….the plow barely comes (big snow in winter – MN) and I often have to shovel a path too the road myself. I’ve complained, but the assoc. pres. jumped down my throat and denied the shoddy job. Nothing has been fixed (minor) that were pointed out in the inspection when we moved in (2+ years ago!). They painted our deck with stain and it’s bubbled and cracked…it’s not up to code and is literally propped-up.
They’ve even increased our dues by $55/month at the beginning of the year promising improvements, but still nothing. What can I do?
We live in a REALLY nice neighborhood, too! Most of the single homes are $300-500K in a 5 mile radius.
To be fair, the roof and siding are perfect. The landscaping and other maintenance looks like it hasn’t been touched in 10 years! No one has ever pruned a shrub, planted a plant, replaced mulch, etc… We have to water our own lawns, but they do mow once in a while.
I have complained several times about the deck and even had the president over looking at it and everyone agrees it looks like a 5-year-old did it. Still, nothing’s been done or even promised. No solutions have ever been made to correct it!
In response to the first answer:
The President resigned (total whacko, so we’re all really happy) about 2 months ago. No one is running the association now, she scared most of the volunteers off, so it’s just a few people trying to keep things together. It’s just neighbors volunteering their time/work, so there is no management company or anything to keep things up to par.
As far as the neighbors banning together to demand better, everyone’s complained with no results for so long (literally decades) that I think everyone just accepts it now.

Suntan answers:

You must have association monthly meetings – right?
Well if all of the residents ban together and ask or the resignation of the board…elect a new board. This is a democracy…get the board out!

That should do it.

Good luck

Your Questions About Landscape Jobs

August 12th, 2011 by Suntan

James asks…

Have just started a landscape garden company but not sure how to price the jobs?

Any ideas how to price jobs for landscaping and should I target large houses in well to do areas. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Suntan answers:

My first thought is do you have any landscape or horticulture experience? The big thing is to find what your overhead is along with all of your other expenses. You need to find out how much it costs you per hour per piece of equipment your using. You need to figure out your skill level and your employees skill level to determine how many hours it takes to do different tasks. There are also books you can purchase to help you figure out how much time each tasks will take. I recently graduated from a landscape program at a technical college and I had an estimating class that helped with that. As for what to target when you are first starting out take just about any job you can get your hands on. If you limit your target market to a certain house size you rfeally limit your market. I would also look at not just limiting your market to new construction or just renovation work. These are just a few things I learned at school. The books you may want to purchase are Labor &Equipment Production Times for Landscape Contractors by Charles Vander Kooi, the other book is Landscape Estimating and Contract Administration. As for an actual per hour rate it depends on the area of the country you live in. Another thing you may want to consider is giving a bid instead of charging the customer a flat hourly rate. Some contractors just base their labor costs from a percentage of their material costs but this isn’t the best way. I hope this helps. Good luck, I will be starting my own design/ build firm in a few years.

Sandy asks…

are there many jobs for landscape architects?

i think im going to study landscape architecture in college mabye at philadelphia u. is this a good idea? are there many job opportunities for me after college or should i study something else?

Suntan answers:

You should check it out on Salary.com. You can search for the occupation by geographic location and it also gives you an outlook on the profession (i.e. Is it growing/declining, etc.)

William asks…

What types of career jobs are there such as landscape gardener that you can take your dog with you?

I want a job like this so my dog wont be alone all day

Suntan answers:

Own your own business! When you are your own boss, you can do whatever you please!

Lizzie asks…

Moving to Mesa, Arizona area?

Hey there. My girlfriend and I are deciding on where we want to move. We are coming from Scranton, PA (2 hours away from Philly and NYC). She just graduated with her Masters in Elementary Education, and got word that the Phoenix area is always looking for new teachers. I myself work chump jobs, but am studying for my personal trainer certification and am looking at going to school for geology or a related science. This will be our first big move together, and everything about the Phoenix/Mesa area looks pretty darn good to us. But still I wanted to hear from some people who live there or know it well.

1. How is crime in the city? I can’t find much info outside of statistics, not much in the way of first hand tellings.

2. What kind of work is there in Mesa or the surrounding areas, considering I have a solid history with anything construction, landscaping, etc.?

3. Is the area bicycle or runner friendly?

4. Are there neighborhoods or areas that are suggested over another for two people in their mid-20s who aren’t much into partying at all, and would be happier in a more quiet and safer living area?

Suntan answers:

Arizona is a wonderful place.

Low crime in the east valley (Mesa/Gilbert), EXTREMELY family friendly and plenty to do if you aren’t into the party scene. I’m 25, have lived in NY for several months, Miami for a few years, Texas for a few years and in Cali for a summer and I always go back to Arizona. Where else can you (in only a matter of hours) get from your house to the beach, or to the mountains to snowboard, or to another country (Mexico), or to the sandunes in the desert, or to Vegas, or to a lush forest, or to the red rocks of Sedona, or to the grand canyon or to multiple lakes/states…?? Anyone who say it’s boring is crazy.

Congrats and good luck!!! :)
