Many people love their outdoor patios and wouldn’t trade them for other things. Others however may decide they need to use their patio in inclement weather to have more space on the floor on their existing home. By installing patio enclosures, the area works extremely well almost all year long, whatever the weather and outdoor temperature. Heating ducts could be combined with the current furnace or electric or gas space heaters works extremely well in the winter months. Portable air conditioners make sure they are usable even heat with the summer.
For a lot of homeowners, patio enclosures are only a method of adding an extra room their house and also the extra walls and ceiling never have really created an outdoor living area, but converted a an empty area into another room. However, you’ll find patio enclosures that may work as both and not using a lots of headache. With large, opening windows that could be closed in bad weather and opened throughout the summer, they can hold the better of both worlds.
Homeowners who wish the design and feel of the deck may choose open wall patio enclosures design providing you with overhead protection only, leaving three sides with the patio open to the sun and rain, having no plans, or require to use it through the dead of winter.
Growing Families May require More Space
In case a family already carries a patio, they could choose to convert it in a play room, or a changing room for his or her children’s pool and rehearse patio enclosures to seal the deal. A thing of caution with patio enclosures however, is always to be sure there’s a reasonable foundation and support for walls and a roof before beginning the task.
Most patios are created with bricks or pavers using a bed of sand. That is hardly the support needed when adding walls and a roof, whatever the dimensions with the materials being utilized. When adding patio enclosures, the framing have to be resting on solid footers installed below the frost line of the given location.
One of the usual steps when installing patio enclosures could be the inclusion of electricity or plumbing, mainly because it does not sound right on an added room inside the ho use and use it as an old cottage. When practicing these upgrades most states require services of a licensed electrician, that is a good plan to avoid possible fires to the new patio enclosures.

Helen asks…
How many years could I face in prison for what I’ve done?
Ok, so here is the deal: I have committed crimes and am under house arrest until I go to court. I want to know how many years I can face in prison for them.
My crimes are:
Taking a dump on a guys porch that’s about 3 blocks away from me for the past month (He has it all on video)
Throwing my feces at 7 different children in the park.
Managing to escape from an officer.
Running back to the officers car and smearing my feces all over the his windshield and trying to escape but failed this time.
Taking a dump behind the counter at abrys and stealing 4 boxes full of ketchup and pushing over all the trash cans until I was fired.
Taking a dump in walmart behind the shelves where they sell toothpaste, deo, etc.
Taking another dump in arbys while I went there to get a b-fast wrap right in the dooray (no one could see me though except the cameras)
Stealing fish food from petsmart to feed my 7 pet angelfish
stealing 7 angelfish from a local petshop
Taking a dump during the after hours in a goldfish tank and peeing in the fire bellied toads enclosure at petsmart.
Pushing over an entire store shelf and the manager when he tried to fire me from petsmart.
Broke open the claw machine and stole all the stuffed animals.
Took a dump in the claw machine the next day because it still wasn’t fixed. ( they still hadn’t checked the cameras to see who broke the claw machine)
Took a dump in my neighbors unlocked car (three times)
Took a dump in the cops car while he drove me back to my house and peed on him while he carried me back to my house.
Thats all the crimes I’ve committed and I don’t wanna go to jail! How many years will I have !? PLEASE HELP! How would I get out of the most jail time!

My neighbors dog looks neglected?
Our neighbors dog got loose today while he was away and came to our back door. My mom looked at her collar and it was way too tight. She took it off, and her neck was missing a lot of hair because of it. We noticed that our neighbor keeps her in a small, overgrown, backyard enclosure and she never gets a chance to run around and have fun. This is the only time we’ve seen her out. My mom gave her food and water. She was really thirsty and hungry but she’s not skinny. Our neighbor hasn’t returned yet and the dog is still hanging around our back porch. What should we say to our neighbor when he returns? Should we just go and buy the dog a new collar and not say anything at all? I really don’t know what to do, but I feel sorry for the dog. Any help would be appreciated.

Suntan answers:
If he’s being fed and given water, and is in sustainable conditions, there’s nothing you can really do, unfortunately. But getting a new collar for the dog won’t hurt anyone, that’s nice of you to offer that, and I bet they won’t say no.
Fill us in on what happens!

Mark asks…
How do I stop my dogs from running through my pool enclosure screens?
The screens initially had holes in them when we moved into the home, so the dogs learned to go in and out through the screens to run around the fenced in back yard. The only problem is that they are dragging all sorts of dirt and debris in with them which is making a complete mess of our patio. My husband goes outside and repairs the screens only to have the dogs run full speed through them, pulling them out again. We’ve tried glue, probably not the right glue, to enforce the rubber piping holding the screens in, but maybe we didn’t use very good glue? Please help! We are exhausted from cleaning the back porch constantly!

Recommend some plastic lattice. It comes in 4×8 sheets. Is the dog small enough that you cut it down and make 2×8 panels?

Michael asks…
Bearded dragon natural sunlight?
Someone dumped a bearded dragon in a box on my front porch this morning. I have had bearded dragons before but not for a long long time.
I have everything I need except a UVB light. And I can’t get one until I get paid next friday.
So my question is… I live in a place where it is around 90F most of the summer. So can I take him outside in the sun in a secure enclosure for a few hours a day until I get a UVB light? Or will this cause some kind of irreversible harm from not being exposed most of the day?

Suntan answers:
That will be fine as a temporary fix. You do want to provide heat for him while he is inside in his enclosure and this can be provided with a regular household bulb. The only way to get accurate temps is with a temp gun or digital thermometer with a probe directly on the basking spot. This temp should be 100-110 (37.7-43.3C) and the cool side should be around 80 (25.5-27.7C). Temps are essential to digestion, so if your temps are not hot enough, he could be at risk of impaction and other digestive issues.
Be wary of which UVB you buy. Most of the ones on the market right now are bad quality. All compact coil bulbs are dangerous, and the only recommended linear fluorescent bulb is the ReptiSUN 10.0 (not ReptiGLO) in the US or the Arcadia 12% in the UK (http://www.uvguide.co.uk)
The other option is an MVB, which provides heat and UVB, but because they are so powerful, should only be used in 40g tanks or bigger. The good brands are Powersun and Megaray, with Megaray being the best. They cost a bit more than the fluorescent but they are good for a year, compared to 6 months for the fluor so the yearly cost is about the same.
Please continue your research at http://www.beardeddragon.org to learn everything you need to know about taking care of your dragon! Some of the practices and care info has changed drastically in the past decade, so be sure you are up to date on your care info.
Best of luck!

Jenny asks…
Is there a way to calm down an angry dog that isn’t yours?
I’ve never had my own dog, so I don’t know much about them to start with. Last week (before the snow), I was walking down the street. On my left, there were two dogs in a fenced enclosure. My first thought was “Hey there. Just passing through.”
I kept walking, at a steady pace. I was on the right side of the road, and as I said, that house was across the street on my left. I didn’t say anything or act threatening in any way. The dogs barked as I got closer, but I didn’t think anything of it. “Dogs bark all the time.” Then they started growling at me and pacing around, looking for a way out. Sure they were fenced in, but you know dogs. If they want to get out badly enough, they’ll find a way.
I slowed down and observed their behavior. The growling is what really bothered me. “What did I do?” I thought. One of them was a golden retriever, and as far as I knew, they were nice dogs by nature. The other was a darker dog. Suddenly I heard barking coming from a porch on my right, from a smaller dog. Looking around at my adversaries on both sides, I was thankful not to be a feeble old man.
My normal reaction in that situation would have been to bark back at all the dogs, loudly and forcefully (to show my dominance and honestly, my anger), but I had been feeling bummed out on that day, I had a headache, and I was tired. I was not in the mood to fight off three dogs who could potentially attack me from behind. Regardless, I picked up the pace and continued on, making sure to turn and look back every so often. When I got to the end of the road, I decided to walk around the entire block to get back home. I know how to take care of myself in a fight, but I’m smart enough to try my best to avoid confrontations. After all, I sure as hell wouldn’t be able to afford any medical bills right now.
Perhaps the more important question is this: Why are animals so territorial in the first place? Seems cruel, in my opinion. I tell you what, though. If I had a dog or cat who acted territorial, I’d discipline that behavior immediately.

Suntan answers:
Not all animals are territorial….. A lot of species roam and do not “settle down” in one area….even within the feline genus for example, many species of cat roam and change hunting grounds…. To answer your question though, many dog breeds ARE territorial because that’s what they were bred specifically for over hundreds of years, it was/is their sole purpose for existing. It’s how they stayed fed essentially.
Farm/Flock guardians like the Akbash, Maremma, Kuvasz, Anatolian Shepherd etc were bred to guard their flocks against any and everything that came close, regardless of whether it meant to do harm or not.
Some dogs were bred to guard houses and people- Doberman Pinser was a tax collector’s accomplice and protected them when they went to take people’s money! Tibetan Mastiff, English Mastiff, Fila Brasiliero, etc were bred to guard monasteries, castles and homes (respectively).
So, it’s your opinion that you’d “discipline that behavior immediately”, but it is indeed an opinion forged out of ignorance of dog breeds.
TO answer your question though, these dogs are unsocialized and enclosed in a yard probably all day, probably they get no exercise to burn off their excess energy. This energy doesnt dissipate, it merely pens up until they explode with it! Theyll run in circles, chase their tails, begin neurotic behaviors like excessively licking themselves (barbering), or theyll become fixated on people passing by their fence.. Im willing to bet the house I own on the fact that these dogs you encountered are not exercised properly and are not well cared for— so I equate their situation to jail….. If you were in jail, and your cell abutted the street sidewalk, wouldn’t you eventually become fixated on the passers by? Wouldnt that be all you had to look forward to all day? Possibly engaging a passerby? That’s how they live, and it’s sad because a nice 5 mile run daily, some love and some training (agility sports, hunting training, water and swim training etc since you said one was a golden retriever!) would fix those dogs up in no time.
This is why they do what they do.

Weatherproofing TV for outside use. Need help.?
I just got my hands on a Commercial Grade Television (LCD) that I am going to use for my covered back porch. When not in use, I will rig up a setup so it will retract up into the ceiling and into the attic. Rain water will never touch this TV.
I live in Houston where the humidity can get pretty bad. I checked the temperature range for the operating/storage conditions and I should always be within the range.
Humidity is really the only thing that I am worried about. First of all, do you think humidity will be a problem once up in the attic? I mean, there are alot of things up there (AC, Water heater, etc…) that don’t rust and have electric components.
If it is going to be a problem, I have considered creating an enclosure made of plexiglass. The problem with this is that there has to be holes in it somewhere for ventillation and sound.
So really what I am looking for are any thoughts, concerns, ideas, past experiences, etc…
Thanks.

Suntan answers:
Humidity is a problem for connectors, but if you can keep it somewhat sealed in the storage position, it might not be a problem. More of a problem would be if it was very cold and you brought it into a warmer, humid environment where condensation might occur inside – that could be very bad to power up a TV that has condensation on the circuit boards.
As for the attic, heat is also a problem for storage or operation.
You’ve got quite an engineering problem to solve!

NEED ADVICE ON MY CAT PLEASE LOOK!!?
So my female cat is 8 years old, was spayed at 6 months so never had a heat, and she’s been a strictly indoor cat this entire time. However, about a week ago for the first time she got out onto the porch, and towards the garage but she didn’t really try to runa way so i got her and brought her back in. She acted like she really wanted to be outside, so i brought her out yesterday into this enclosure i have for my puppy. Now, i put her back in today, because she was scratching at the door and meowing like crazy, but she acts like she doesn’t want to be in it, so i bring her back in and she tries to run out… she’s never really tried this before but now i can’t even open the door w/o her acting like a freak about it. Any ideas???? Please, i almost lost her today… she’d prolly get killed if she was an outside cat.

Suntan answers:
What worked for me was to keep a squirt bottle filled with water ready at the door. When you are going into the house open the door just a little bit with the squirt bottle ready. If she comes towards the door just give her a little squirt.
This worked like a charm for my littlest girl. She was pretty persistent, but now she doesn’t try at all.

George asks…
My front patio is open at each end, I want to close them off quickly & easiy and cheaply, but leave airflow.?
I don’t have the money to put up a screened enclosure, and the main reason I want to close them off is due to ducks that come onto the porch and do their dirty duck duties. Very stinky and messy, I can’t enjoy my patio. I just want to close off each end in a manner that is temporary and can be taken down easily if necessary. I also want to keep my airflow. Any Ideas? I thought about lattice but can’t seem to think of an easy way to accomplish the task. It would be costly as well.
Hi April H, that is a great Idea, I am almost embarrassed that I couldn’t come up with an easy fix such as that! I appreciate your input so much. Thanks!
I’d probably have to fill the bottoms of the pots with stones though to add weight, as sometimes I get heavy winds off the water.
I tried blocking off the bottom already chas, but the duck flew right over the top of the partial wall blockade. They are pesky litte turds. Thank you

Suntan answers:
Simply place zinc panels along the borders of your patio (standing up) lying on their sides.
Secure the corners using T-posts.
This provides a blockade to deter the ducks from entering that area.

Charles asks…
My RES got in our pool, is that safe?!?
After 3 years Myrtle finally figured out how to escape from her outdoor baby pool and its enclosure! She immediately high-tailed it across the lawn and under the pool yard fence and deposited herself in our in-ground swimming pool. I saw her escape from where I was sitting on the porch and immediately ran out and fished her out with the skimmer net so she only swam around for maybe 2 minutes. My question is how harmful is swimming pool water for red eared sliders? She seems fine, this was 2 days ago, and she’s still active and eating and everything normal. I know the water quality in her tank is stablized and filtered so I worry that the pool water was too chlorinated. I haven’t been able to find anything in my books or anywhere about turtles being exposed to pool water so I’m curious.
Thanks!
I forgot to mention that when I got her out of the pool I took her isnide and rinsed her in the utility sink for awhile before I put her back in her tank.

Suntan answers:
She’s fine… Chlorinated water is not harmful to your RES or you. It will sting her eyes a littel, but no harm done. I recommend you redo her set-up so she cannot escape again. You were very fortunate that she found the pool. Losing a turtle due to escape is very frustrating. I have been there and know the feeling. Good luck.
Cheers,
JJ

Daniel asks…
Noisy Neighbor?
What do I do about a neighbor who is too loud when his guests are over? I moved into my house last year and love nearly everything about it but the neighbor next to me. Very frequently, about once a month, he has several guests over. He mostly entertains them on his back porch, which just has a screen enclosure. My bedroom is on the same side of his porch, so I can hear everything. I’ve been awakened at 1, 2, 3 am to the sound of shreeking laughter from women and just general noise. I tried ignoring this the first six or seven times this happened, despite the fact I was losing sleep, because he is a nice guy and people have a right to enjoy their homes. However, it is getting out of hand. It’s not like he has his guests leave at a reasonable time.
The first time I asked him to turn down the music, he did. I thought that would resolve it, but last night I had to go to his house & ask him to keep it down. This was at 3 am. I am getting really pissed. What should I do?

Suntan answers:
Ok everyone does have the right to do what the will in their own house and yard, however if whatever they are going is interfering with your life and what goes on in your house it impedes on your rights. I would try talking to him again and if that doesn’t solve anything then just start calling the police because it is a noise violation.

Lizzie asks…
Can you house these two species of tree frogs in the same terrarium?
I know as a general rule of thumb you should avoid housing different species of herps in the same enclosure…..however, due to the flexibility of the White’s Tree Frog I was wondering if I could add a Red Eyed Tree Frog into a 20 gallon tall tank that I currently have one sub-adult White’s Tree Frog in. I’ve had my White’s for about 12 or 13 months now and he is a very healthy young male. The only difference I would make is the humidity would be increased if I were to introduce the RETF but that will likely be a welcomed change for the White’s. My White’s is about 2 1/2″ right now and the RETF would be around 2″.
The tank has a thick branch that utilizes the entire width and height of the tank with fake leaves stretching across the top of the tank and wrapping around the branch. There would be two hide huts for separation if need be. Also, there would be one large water bowl big enough for both frogs to be in it at the same time. Daytime temperature would be from 80-85F and nighttime temperature would be from 75-78F. I do have a UTH which will be used in the fall and winter but as of the spring and summer I have my Herps on my enclosed porch in the heat and humidity of central Florida.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Suntan answers:
Well whites usually get pretty big and eventully could eat the smaller one.. But if you want to try make sure theres lots of leaves and when you cant find the smaller one look for it so you know its still there. Also when you introduce them watch them for awhile cause it doesnt take long to eat it. Hope this helps and good luck. Oh also make sure there both getting food at feeding time

Trespassing on Private property, destruction of private property, assault, assault causing bodily harm, fleeing, destruction of private property to an officers vehicle or it could count as vandalism.
Theft, mischief, mischief, theft, theft, mischief, destruction of private property and assault, mischief and theft, destruction of private property, and I’m going to stop there.
Your looking at more then 5 years because it doesn’t seem like you’ll stop, the judge will have no pity, especially because you have done this to an officer of the law, so they’ll take you to the full extent of the law. Looking at… 10 years?
If they can prove all of it, your in a deep shi*hole, but I guess you shat yourself into it. HAHA.

Among other things you will be turned over to a mental hospital first to determine your sanity. Tested for drug abuse. Your lawyer will answer the questions about jail time. If you didn’t want to go to jail then why in the world did you do all that? At the very least you need to be in a mental hospital. You are a danger to yourself and everyone around you.

Robert asks…
How to attract dragonflies?
My fiance and I are going to add some more flowers and plants to our backyard around the outside of our screen enclosure. Our house backs up to a canal, and there are LOTS of them flying over the water all the time, but I love them and want more to fly closer to the back porch where I can see them. What plants/flowers attract them?

Suntan answers:
They eat mosquitoes and the larvae. So have water element in your garden will bring them. I put in a pond with goldfish and I have dragon flies and butterflies all over the place! I love it! Have fun

John asks…
There are three kittens and there mother living on my porch?
its an enclosure, so the kittens can’t jump out, it’s a great hiding spot but I guess the mother didn’t anticipate me being there. I just started to give them food, but when I get close she hisses (and other narley noises) I’m not trying to make them house pets, just simply friendly and somewhat tame to me, even the mother. The only thing I can think of is just give it time and let her get used to me, the kittens will be ok with me, if the mom lets them get close. What do you guys think?

Suntan answers:
It’s great that you’re feeding these strays, and yes, probably over time they will become used to you and more friendly.
However, if you are feeding them you are kind of taking on a responsibility for their welfare. The mother and kittens will probably have worms and fleas, and also the mother really needs to be spayed. If you don’t want to make them house pets then please do as another poster suggested and contact a rescue centre so they can be treated/homed.

Donna asks…
Cat Living in an Outdoor Enclosure?
Long story short: my sweet 3 year old rescue cat has been urinating in the house. My parents will not allow her to live inside any more, and she in unadoptable because of her problem.
She is a timid little sweetheart so I don’t think she would be able to defend herself as a purely outdoor cat. We live on the outskirts of a big city, which means a busy road and lots of stray cats, as well as skunks, racoons and other wildlife. We have a large backyard and woods though.
So I think that maybe the best thing for her would be an outdoor enclosure. We have a porch that I could put fencing around. I’d give her a crate to sleep in and a small enclosed grassy area to do her business in, and I’d spend time with her out there.
I don’t want her to be harmed in any way, and the outdoors is the only way she’ll not be put to sleep. Would she be better off just roughing it out there? Or would she be able to stay in the porch area? I’ve heard a lot about these enclosures but never of cats living in them full-time.
My question is: would this be safe? Would it be humane?
The urination matter has been exhausted. We have tried everything and have been told that it’s strictly behavioral. My parents are at the end of their rope and refuse to try anything but kicking her out.

Suntan answers:
Have you had her checked over by a vet to see if there is a reason for this behaviour?
Has it come on suddenly? Have there been changes to the household that may have set her off?
It is not cruel to keep her like this, but it would be a pity not to try and find out why she is behaving this way first to see if it can be stopped.
You may find that if it is behavioural, even if you do not have the patience to change her, a rescue might.

have a Jack Russel/Beagel He will bite if gets out of the yard. He bit a ittle girl yes. how do i stop this?
We have done everything we can to keep him in the yard. railroad ties around the bottom of our fence, chair backs lining the porch fence, built an enclosure around our deck. we have spent hundreds trying to contain him. but there are instances where my kids will get careless and not latch the gate behind them. Luckily i can get him to come back to me, but yesterday i wasn’t quick enough. he bit a little girl it didn’t break the skin but she is bruised. he plays with my kids, our other dog(who is the most gentle dog ever) and our cats. but anytime some one new is around him he nips at them. Now that he actually BIT my neighbors daughter i dont know what to do with him. how can i stop this behavior?

Suntan answers:
This dog is bored! Are you taking him for a couple of hour long walks each day, an/or a run in the park, or some Frisbee, etc. The dog gets out because it has no other way to burn off excess energy.
Get busy with some hard exercise for this guy and then sign up for some basic obedience classes. He is in dire need of some structured training.
Remember, a good dog is a tired dog.

I wish to write up a petition UN-banning fences at my condo complex! Now how do i do that? HELP…?
I wish to write up a petition UN-banning fences at my condo complex.
Our condo complex is made up of 155 unit and only 70 of them are being used at the moment.
Our HOA (home owners association) is being run NOT by the people who live here but by a separate managing company we have set in place as none f us GO to the meetings.
There was a new rule made as of this last month in April Banning fences or any kind of enclosure. (including lining your porch with plants or chairs to make it SEEM as if you have a fence)
There are very few people here who erect fences, my neighbor is one of them. The fences are used to keep large and small dogs from running over to other peoples porches or running after the many cats that linger the common areas.
Some common areas include a large open pond stepping off the porch to each unit -so if you have a small child, and you wish to put a fence up, to keep your child from falling in the pond, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED to.
Our common areas are also fenced off so you may not go into our common areas unless you have a KEY. Another reason why it’s a pointless rule as no one can see our common area unless they live here.
NOT one person was at the meeting when this subject banning fences was brought up. So as you can see this is a useless rule and stupid one as well.
As you are seeing my dellema i wish to fight fire with fire.
I want to make a petition to UN-ban fences and once again allow them.
Please help me with what to write.
Maybe a paragraph or two- anything really….
I will post it up on our mail box unit, and then proceeded to go from each unit to unit, and have people sign it.

Suntan answers:
Skip the petition…gather people and convince them to go to the next meeting…if no one goes, and you bring a dozen people, you should be able to get the rule changed.
