George asks…

What type/gauge wire for solar landscape (LED) wire replacement?

got these from Costco online: Westinghouse Deluxe Spotlight (model # 371102-78R)

i have limited specs on them,
I know the LED is equal to 5watt incandescent
and the batteries are 1200mah lithium…
and the cord that came preinstalled is like an RCA cable thickness (not Red/Yel/Whi but just one of the three)

but a rat chewed the cord so I gotta splice it and fix it.. I also wanted to go an extra 10 ft instead of the default 6 ft….

Any idea what cable I can get (i understand home depot/lowes will sell it) but I wanna just find some on ebay or amazon.. dont know what gauge etc to look for.. the regular cord looks like nothing more than the wire inside speaker cable.

Thanks!!!

Suntan answers:

I would use # 14 or #12 gauge wire and make sure the insulation is approved for “direct burial”. Also, if you splice the wire use a splice kit suitable for the purpose. For the amount of wire you need I would just go buy exactly what you need because you’re going to pay for shipping on top of the price of a small amount of wire if you get it online.

Robert asks…

Looking for Black Lava Rock to finish a landscaping project. Can’t find it at any of the local retailers?

I’ve been told by Home Depot and Lowes that this problem is a supplier issue (Nashville area).

Suntan answers:

You can but it over here on the internet:

http://www.landscapeandgarden.com/decorativerock.shtml#rainbowriver

or just take other thing similar to it , take some carbon and trim it into pieces , its up to you

John asks…

I need a gate for my wire fence?

With my husband’s help, we installed a 4ft high welded wire fence with metal posts in our yard for our two dogs. It actually looks fairly decent. We didn’t get a gate though because neither Lowes nor Home Depot carried a welded wire gate or any lighter weight gate for that type of fence system. Anyone know where I could get one – maybe at a landscape company? Since I used a utility fence maybe a garden gate would work? Any ideas?

Suntan answers:

Chain link gates are easy to build and install. You could replace the chain link with the welded wire on the gate. It would blend right in.

You may have to install a post to swing the gate on, but it’s easy to do.

Donald asks…

free standing heavy bag – what kind of sand?

I have a free standing heavy bag where you fill the base with sand or water. (Water isn’t working well). I was told that Home Depot has some kind of landscaping sand that might work well. I’ve read the finer the sand the better?

Does anyone know that type of sand would be the best to use, and where I could find it? Thanks!

Suntan answers:

Any, as long as it’s heavy, go for the cheaper one.

Laura asks…

Can I buy regular square tiles and set them down in my front yard?

We just bought a house! I have no landscaping experience. We have a good size window in front. There are 3 small ugly bushes right infront!. I was wondering if i take them out..(easy) can i just buy regular tile from the depot to make some what of a “porch”? Do i need to buy sement or other $$ items? I wanted a nice area where I can sit and and chill. I have photos i can email of my yard,l if it helps giving advice.
THANKS

Suntan answers:

Home Depot and stores like that sell all kinds of outdoor brick and tiles. Dig down a bit under the area(s) where you are laying the tile so that your tiles are not elevated.

Carol asks…

How much rock to buy?

My hubby and I want to do a rock wall with the landscaping rocks(like they have at Home Depot) How on earth do we know how much rock to buy???Help??

Suntan answers:

We used the calculator on their website. There are also brochures in the back of the store that help you calculate the rock you will need. Alanblock also has a project estimator.

Robert asks…

Would you hire someone who was outside home depot waiting to be picked up for work?

Mustachioed and graying, dressed in the uniform of a full-time job he once had, Gonzalo Garcia is out in front of The Home Depot on Lake Worth Road most mornings, and it doesn’t take much to catch his eye.

A braking pickup or the wave of a driver’s hand will send him and several other Hispanic day laborers rushing to the departing vehicle, their eyes bright with the possibility of a day’s work.

Garcia, at 49 a father of four, says he tends to hang back as the younger workers push forward. But his counterparts often run, hoping to be chosen to paint, rip out drywall or lay bricks.

The onslaught, a symptom of the voracious competition for dwindling numbers of day jobs, can be surprising to the unsuspecting, and even frightening.

In recent years, the Hispanic day laborers have become as much a part of the scenery at The Home Depot west of Lake Worth as the fence and hedges, and as more lose full-time jobs in construction or landscaping, their numbers seem to have grown.

The Home Depot is not pleased. Blaming the job seekers for causing accidents and driving away customers, the world’s largest home improvement retailer has been working to discourage them from rushing vehicles in the driveways and trespassing in the parking lot.

But the need for work keeps pushing the men forward, and the result has been an entrenched standoff.

Garcia, an undocumented Guatemalan national who had a regular job in construction until being laid off late last year, said he and the others only want to work and have no other way to find steady pay.

“We’re not here because we want to be here,” he said in Spanish. “We need to be.”

Suntan answers:

No, would not hire them even push my vehicle to the curb, if it stalled in the traffic…Reason is simple since there would be no binding contract between me(employer) and them (employees) there would be no legal bond for them to do job properly & right, as I have seen illegals walk off the jobs they started- half-done. They are most undependable workers there are.Other reason is it would be ILLEGAL to hire them….Sorry Hombreros no trabajo-Volver a sus casas en Monterrey. Adios!…

Chris asks…

Where can I find big plants and shrubs to do my landscaping garden?

Besides Home Depot and Lowe’s where can I find a variety of outdoor plants. Elephant plants and the big ones that favors palms. I need help finding the right place in Baltimore.

Suntan answers:

Any local nursery. The bigger the plant, the more you will pay for it. You will have a difficult time finding sub-tropical plants in Baltimore.

Joseph asks…

Anybody know a common place to go to purchase bamboo rolls for landscaping?

I’m looking to border the bottom gap of my deck (about 2-3 feet high) with bamboo rolls instead of lattice. Not sure where to find this after having failed to find it on the big Lowes/Depot stores. Thanks.

Suntan answers:

I have these in my garden but bigger. Going out of fashion a bit. Scotsdales of Shelford nr Cambridge still have them and you can order over the internet.

Ken asks…

Retail Company with best benefits and starting pay?

I work landscaping in the summer, which means in winter I need to get a new job. I have a 5 year background in retail, and last worked at a convenience store starting at $8 an hour but terrible benefits. Ive looked at Staples,Home Depot, and several other places-looking for info on any retail company that offers good starting pay as well as good benefits.I live in the North East so anywhere around there applies.Any info is appreciated.
Need as in I have enough money to get me by until landscaping starts, but Id like something to give me extra cash plus benefits.Ive read up on Home Depot and Petsmart and it seems like they are terrible places.

Suntan answers:

You said “i need to get a new job”, if you are in an emergency situation of finding a job, take whatever is available to you regardless of how good benefits they give, and then while you are having a job you can look for another job with benefits. Take whatever good chance comes to you first.

Joseph asks…

Where am I supposed to find someone to keep my lawn looking fresh?

Ever since Arizona passed that law I can’t find anyone to do my landscaping in Arizona without charging me up the azz! Who am I supposed to get to take care of my landscaping now!? And who is supposed to build the shed I was planning on building this summer now that I can’t find any Hispanics in front of the Home Depot!?

Suntan answers:

Look in the mirror and do it your f&&&&ing self. I think you’re making this shtt up. そ

David asks…

Best way to remove tall fescue from lawn?

I have been seeing a lot of people asking how to remove tall fescue from their lawns, it is very expensive to do this with a herbicide but it can be done without killing off your whole lawn.
the herbicide cost around $125 for 1.5oz and can treat an acre of grass but must be applied in spring or fall when grass is not under stress or dormant, you need to get this from a professional landscape or fertilizer place, not at home depot or lowes but this is much cheaper then killing off and putting in a new lawn

where can i get the product brush b gone at? can’t find it anywhere. is it only available to green houses?

where can i get the brush be gone? i can’t find it in the local stores like home depot or lowe’s. Is it only availble to the landscaping company, green houses and places like that?
Please help , my bushes in front of my house are over run with the stupid morning glories.

Suntan answers:

Isn’t that strange? You’d think it would be everywhere, but it isn’t. It’s the only thing like that that I used in my yard and I used to have to search for it. I only ever found it at regular neighborhood type hardware stores. Keep looking though, I always did find it eventually.

Carol asks…
