Your Questions About Patio Canopy Swing

June 3rd, 2011 by Suntan

Robert asks…

I am looking to replace the cushion support fabric on an outdoor/patio swing that I purchased from Sears.?

I purchased an outdoor swing from Sears about 3-4 years ago and cannot find any of the paper work. The swing has a greyish, powder finish. The 3 seat single cushion and canopy is off-white & tan with a fern-type leaf pattern. Does anyone know the name of the pattern or how I can contact the manufacturer for a ready made replacement. I’ve thought about having one made but I think it would cost more than the original price of the swing. Maybe a manufactured one will also. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I need to replace the support fabric, not the cushion. The cushion and canopy are a little sun faded but still in great shape.

Suntan answers:

If it were mine, the first thing I would do is see what the support is made up, and how it is attached. If it was screwed on, all I’d do is remove the screws and buy some of the same fabric. Canvas is good.

If it was lapped over and sewn directly to the other surface, I’d call a boat place that advertises canvas repairs, or a camper place, and ask the how much the LABOR would be

I know what you’re going through. A new cushion, alone, was only $10 less tan the whole swing. I just made my own.

Laura asks…

european paper wasps building underneath everything in my yard?

they are everywhere i check under, with usually just one or a few cells built. none of the wasps look like queens. they are under the patio chair cushions, under the coffee table, under the swing canopy and worst of all, in the plastic climber that the kids play on. they keep coming back. should I move house or can anyoner tell me how to get rid of them. we live near pine woods. you would think they would be happy in there!

Suntan answers:

The best thing to suggest would be to contact your local council.
They should be able to come and dispose of them and the hive for you.
This should be free of charge as it should be covered by your council tax.
If they insist on charging then trawl through the local yellow pages. You should be able to find a pest control company that will be able to get rid of them for you.
It would be worth getting a few quotes as these guys charge what they want.
I wouldn’t suggest trying to do it your self as they get really mad and sting.
Good luck :-)

Jenny asks…

Whats a website where I can find a piece of patio furniture like this?

I was at my friends house, and they had this swing.
The swing folded from couch style to bed style,
it had a canopy over it,
and it also had mosquito net curtains, all around it.
Now I really want one. :)
So, my questions.

1. Does anyone know of a website or store where I can find one at? (Maybe where I can find one cheap, but it doesn’t matter really.) and

2. If you don’t know of a website where I can find one, In your opinion, How much do you think it would cost?

this has to be what you’re talking about! And it’s absolutely gorgeous:)

Good Luck!

Your Questions About Patio Canopy

Michael asks…

I am trying to find new mark industry, which supplies orders through lowes home improvements?

i need to purchase a canopy for my patio. it is a replacement from which I originally purchased at lowes. the lowes rep. told me to contact “new mark industry” because that is where I will be able to place this order

Suntan answers:

This company carries some Lowe’s canopies:

Ruth asks…

What can I plant in a shady area to repel mosquitoes?

What plants can I put around the perimeter of our patio to repel mosquitoes? We live in the mid-Atlantic. The patio and surrounding area are covered in shade from a dense canopy of mulberry trees. I love the shade so I don’t want to trim the trees.

Suntan answers:

This is not a repellent but a trap (link below) that can be made with common supplies. It uses yeast to generate carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes. Use it to lead mosquitoes away from guests (place the trap in dark corners).

There’s a commercial model that uses propane as the source for the production of carbon dioxide. Expensive, I think.

Susan asks…

good patio sets???????

can u find me a nice patio set that has at least 2 chairs maybe a small couch a table and either a big umbrella or canopy?i would like it to be under 700 dollars if possible and i want to be able to buy it all from the same place. nothing from sears please! thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suntan answers:

You can buy a big table umbrella at lower price so that could spend more on a nice couch. This is one of a good place to buy patio umbrellas at reasonable price, and you can pay on 10% off discount if you offer the coupon code “for10″ at check out.

Donald asks…

Looking for replacement cushions and canopy for an outdoor 3 seat swing purchased at Wal-mart?

Swing frame in green with scallops at top cross bar, has a canopy main color is tan with flaps all the way around with 1 inch wide maroon stripe and thin green stripe on either side of maroon stripe. Has arm pillows that are same as canopy and velcro holds them in place on arm frame. Seat cushions are tan in color with maroon flowers on vines all over it. Has some green in design here and there. Cushions have flaps that hang over the front of the swing where you sit. Cushions also has a piece of tan material between seat and back cushion that attaches the two. Swing has two wheels on one end and can be picked up by a handle and moved easily on a porch or patio.

Suntan answers:

None are made.

Time for a seamstress. I made mine, and it took me a day, and $130 in fabric.

William asks…

How to repair a canvas/metal canopy swing?

Anyone have any idea how to fix a canvas/metal lawn swing? It’s old, someone gave it to me about 5 years ago because she no longer wanted it (the canopy part was ripped off and lost during a heavy windstorm)…. I enjoyed it for awhile, but last year, the canvas (I think it’s canvas?) start to rip on the seat, and has now ripped completely.

I’m in between – fix it, or toss it?

I want to fix it, and would HATE to toss it…

Any ideas how to fix it? Or, use the swing frame, to put a new material on it….. What sort of material would work? Any advice?

The swing is sorta like this: https://www.allamericanpool-patio.com/xcart/files/t_371.jpg
But not exactly like it.. Just to give you an idea.

Anyone, anything? =)

Suntan answers:

I have a similar swing and it did the same thing. Take the dimensions of your seat cushion. Go to your local fabric store like Jo-Ann’s and in at the back they have outdoor fabrics, ask about the right thread to use also. Witha sewing machine or by hand just a few straight seams and you can make like a new pillowcase. I did this and it looks great. Make to a little long and just tuck the end under the seat. If you’re feeling real handy and have the canopy frame you can make a new canopy too. Its just a big rectangle and some tie to the frame. You dont have to cut out the scallps or even edge it. The outdoor fabric won’t fray. Good Luck.

Your Questions About Patio Canopy

Joseph asks…

will patio furniture kill your lawn?

i would i be able to keep a canopy with patio furniture on my lawn without the grass dying? how well would the grass stand up to it? would watering my lawn ruin the patio furniture?

Suntan answers:

The shade from the canopy will keep the lawn from being as lush without the shade. Therefore any furniture and people’s weight put on the weakened grass will weaken it even more.

Depends on what kind of patio furniture you get whether watering your lawn will ruin it. If rain will ruin it, watering your lawn will ruin it.

Mark asks…

Regarding the big canvus patio covers?

I purchased a house that has the big canopy that we removed for winter. How do you clean these?

Suntan answers:

Take it to the laundry mat and use the double front load washer, but don’t put it in the dryer, Put it back on while it is damp, if it draws tight, then it will dry without any wrinkles.

Robert asks…

Where can I get replacement parts for a metal patio swing?

I can find several places that will sell the canopy but I need the clip part that hooks the swing to the frame. I can not find a place that has the kind of hardware I’m looking for any help?

Suntan answers:

I recently bought a new canopy replacement online. It’s quite satisfying and the price is reasonable. Hope this could help you: http://www.thelashop.com/home.php?cat=87

George asks…

I am looking to buy waterproof and weatherproof fabric?

I am looking to buy waterproof fabric to make a cover for my patio table and chairs. I am also looking for fabric to make a replacement canopy for my patio swing. I live in Brampton ON and I can shop anywhere in the GTA area.

Suntan answers:

The absolute best fabric for this is Sunbrella. It is expensive, but will last many years, does not fade, mildew and, waterproof and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. It runs about $30 or more a yard. There are some lower cost versions available but I have not found them at the fabric stores. In my area we have a store called Fabric Depot. That is a very large place and has great sales from time to time on Sunbrella.

Steven asks…

Is this a durable canopy top replacement?

Have tried to buy this stuff online. I plan to replace the old one on our patio this summer. Can anyone tell me if this is a good one? The size fit my canopy frame but don’t know the how is the quality.

Your Questions About Patio Canopy

Carol asks…

How do I build a backyard shelter for the patio?

I don’t want an octagonal or hexagonal gazebo. I just need to make a square shelter. No walls needed. Or, I could use a square gazebo. Something simple and to keep the sun and rain off.
If you know of any websites or books/videos than would be helpful on this specific topic, please let me know.

It seems to me that it would be very simple to do. Kind of like a canopy bed, but without the bed, and, with an angled canopy/roof so that the rain will run off. But, if there’s a tried-and-true way to do it, I would appreciate the info. :)

The section of the patio that I want to cover is 10′ x 10′. I will make it out of cedar.

Thanks

Suntan answers:

We built ours using a Sunset book that is sold at the Lowes, Perogals, Patio Covers and Gazebos. It gives very detailed instructions and material lists for a wide variety of different patio covers. We actually combined the plans of two different designs to meet our needs and it was very simple to build, but it took this husband and wife team a few more days to complete the project than the book indicated.

Mary asks…

where can i purchase a replacement canopy for a swing made by Courtyard Creations that i bought at Wal-Mart?

I have a patio swing that was bought from Wal-Mart a few years ago and now the canopy is dry rotted and it has a tear in it. Where can I get a replacement canopy? The swings manufacture is Courtyard Creations. I hope someone can help. Thanks.

Suntan answers:

Gotta ask the obvious. Did you go back to Walmart?

Sandra asks…

How can I shade my back yard patio for a party?

I have a 12 x 24 patio that is in direct sunlight all day. Im looking into permanent options, but I am having a party in a couple of weeks and am looking into a way to shade it. Renting a tent is too expensive and I cant rent a canopy because i cant put a pole in the middle. Looking for a creative inexpensive way to shade the area. Thanks

Suntan answers:

Home Depot sells a canopy type top its used for shading flower beds ets They come in different sizes so you should be able to get one that closely matches the size of your patio. I saw it in the out door area.

Attach on side to your house you can nail it or screw it into the part just under your roof where the wood is. And when the gutter attaches to if you have one. Find a good way to attach it as for the other side you will have to get a little creative. Get some poles and make a frame to attach the other end to the ground say 8′ high attach the poles together to make a frame to the ground accross the top and back to the ground at a slight angle. Pointing away from the house. You can use PVC Pipe its cheap and should only cost you about $15 for the pipe plus the cost of the shader.

The shader is in the outside area in home depot. Should cost around $30
Here is the URL and they sell it in stores too

http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?keyword=garden+shade&langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

if that doesnt show any thing goto home depot and search for “Garden Shade”

Laura asks…

Where can i purchase a replacement canopy for a swing made by Courtyard Creations that i bought at Wal-Mart?

I have a patio swing that was bought from Wal-Mart a few years ago and now the canopy is dry rotted and it has a tear in it. Where can I get a replacement canopy? The swings manufacturer is Courtyard Creations. It is light green with flowers and no model or pattern #. Wal-Mart no longer carries this so I can’t go there for a replacement. Thank You

Suntan answers:

Go to Courtyard Creations website and they will be your best bet in finding a canopy that fits your swing.

Richard asks…

How can a person keep squirrels from destroying their patio furniture?

destroyed canopy on lawn swing and also chewed the back of 1 seat and pulled stuffing out.

Suntan answers:

Put mothballs on around your lawn swing. Do them all over your back yard. Also, try putting garlic around your lawn furniture and on your patio.

Your Questions About Patio Canopy

May 1st, 2011 by Suntan

John asks…

Swing Replacement Canopy needed for Courtyard Creations free-standing patio swing?

I have a Courtyard Creations patio swing with canopy that I bought at Fry’s MarketPlace and the canopy is in shreds as it appears to be pretty cheaply made from what I have read. I am looking for a replacement canopy for this swing. Does anyone know of how to get a hold of this company or has anyone had any experience with this company? Any ideas??
I didn’t pay that much for the swing, so do not want to pay too much for a canopy replacement. I may need the cushions replaced soon as well. I have seen people with similar questions being told to make their own or have a patio company do it? Any ideas on how to make ones own or a patio company that could do it for cheap that is in Arizona…………preferrably near Gilbert, AZ??? I would love any input as soon as possible!
Thank you!!

Suntan answers:

You can call them the phone is 1-877-539-7436.

Joseph asks…

Is it okay to do a canopy in place of a patio?

I’ve been looking into getting a deck or some type of patio for our backyard but everything is running in the thousands and I just don’t have that type of money right now. I want something simple but not cheap looking. I found some really nice canopies online that were fairly inexpensive (around $150-$200) and thought maybe we could just have some concrete poured for the patio and place the canopy on top of that.

Pros & cons, please? Any suggestions?
Something like this:

http://www.lowes.com/pd_92839-19407-S-J-109_4294823015_4294937087?productId=3152891&Ns=p_product_price|1&pl=1&currentURL=/pl_Canopies%2B_4294823015_4294937087_?rpp=15$No=15$Ns=p_product_price|1

I’m talking about a gazebo. I guess thats the word I should have used.

Suntan answers:

Concrete is very expensive to pour. You will be better off doing pavers. I got rid of my deck a few years ago and went with a patio. Best decision I could make. I love the patio because I don’t feel like I’m in a play pen while sitting out there. LOL!

BY the way, those canopies only last a few seasons and you have to store it over the winter otherwise it will rot. So, whatever you do, consider the canopy as temporary. I love the look of them, but they simply do not last.

Charles asks…

How can I make my own canopy frame?

The canopy kits in the stores are so expensive. I would like to make the frame and just use tarps to drape over it. How can I create a sturdy 10′ x 10′ frame, and how do I secure the tarps? The canopy will be placed on concrete (patio). Thank you for your help.

Suntan answers:

Go to a flea market and look at the shade structures made from EMT conduit (metal thinwall pipe for electic use). There are fittings available in many configurations to assemble the structure Usually these same fittings will be available from a vendor at the flea market. You can do the same thing using PVC pipe and fittings. PVC and EMT conduit are available at your local hardware/home center. Get ball bungees to secure tarp to the pipes.

Thomas asks…

What can I plant in my patio for the winter?

We just moved into a new house with a great patio. It was really dry and plain before we fixed it up. We have added a canopy for partial shade, a small grass area, koi pond and a few indoor/outdoor palms. What kind of plants can I put out there that will survive the winter in Las Vegas? I would like to have both inground and potted plants out there. Can anyone help?

Suntan answers:

When your warm- season annuals start to wear down, it’s time to plant your cool- season annuals for winter. The following plants are great choices for our Southern California climate.

Snapdragon
Calendula
Canterbury Bells
Chrysanthemums
Larkspur
Sweet Pea
Nemesia
Primrose
Pansy
Viola

Winter Blooming Perennials
When designing your landscape, always keep in mind that you want to have some color in the dead of Winter.

New Zealand Tea Tree
Happy Wanderer Vine
Cyclamen
Azaleas
Pink Breath of Heaven
Carolina Jessamine
California Lilac

David asks…

What kind of tree can I put on my patio?

I live in Oakland, CA. I have a large patio that gets a lot of indirect light, and only direct sun for a couple of hours a day in mid summer. I’d like to plant a tree in a container that will reach around 7-8 feet in height with a leafy canopy around 2 feet in height and 4 feet in diameter. Any suggestions on tree type and what size container I should use? Thank you!

Suntan answers:

I would consider using one of the following:
-Maple
-Photinia (red leaf in spring)Standard
-Ligustrum (wax leaf privet) Standard
-Pyracantha (bird favourite) Standard
-Purple plum/cherry
All the above can make a canopy and will tolerate lots of shade and can reach the heights you’d like from them if trained properly.
Avoid -Birch(weeping) as it can get quite messy if attacked by aphids, which seem to love those trees! Sticky sap and soot ensues!
Re: container: Cement is nice and will last for years. Pottery can get expensive and dangerous, if say shattered in a winter storm. If you have high winds best to stabilize tall trees by tying, or get a sturdy heavy container like a cement one, to keep that plant’s feet firmly on the firmament!
