Your Questions About Rocks For Landscaping

Friday, June 17th, 2011 by Suntan

David asks…

Where can I find landscaping rocks to line a garden, in Colorado?

I want to line my garden with some nice, flat red rocks, sort of like what you would find on the flatirons in Boulder. However, when I go to home depot, they are $5/ piece. I’m hoping to line the garden for less than $25, any ideas?
Thanks for the suggestions, especially since yes, there are a lot of rocks in the Rocky Mountains? Any park names or areas by the side of the road where I can go exploring? Thank you all for the ideas.

Jeez, they’re not called the Rocky Mountains for nothing, if you need help finding some, get in touch, I’ve got Park Ranger friend in Estes Park. RScott

William asks…

What does the white stuff on top of my landscaping rocks mean?

We live in Vegas and our yard is entirely xeroscaping with rocks and desert plants. We have irrigation for the small plants. Lately we’ve noticed that the rocks near the fence walls remain wet. We’ve also noticed that a white scale is forming on the top of the rocks. What is this? How can I get rid of it? Is it serious?

Suntan answers:

The white stuff is called effervescence and is common on landscaping stones and bricks where the bottom is in a moist environment. As the top of the rock dries in the sun, it draws the moisture from the bottom to the top. Any free minerals carried from the pores of the rock are then deposited on the top of the rock as the moisture evaporates.

It is not serious but is not very aesthetic. As has been mentioned Lime Away or a similar calcium remover will work. Be careful around plants.

Thomas asks…

I had to dig up all of my landscaping rocks to put a new plastic liner underneath. How do I clean the old rocks

They are a mess, and when I tore up the old liner, a whole bunch of dirt came up too. They told me at the nursery not to let dirt get on top of the new plastic as that is a breeding ground for new weeds, but I have no idea how to get rid of the dirt from the rocks.

Suntan answers:

Just hose it down and it’ll be fine.
