Lizzie asks…

Moving to Mesa, Arizona area?

Hey there. My girlfriend and I are deciding on where we want to move. We are coming from Scranton, PA (2 hours away from Philly and NYC). She just graduated with her Masters in Elementary Education, and got word that the Phoenix area is always looking for new teachers. I myself work chump jobs, but am studying for my personal trainer certification and am looking at going to school for geology or a related science. This will be our first big move together, and everything about the Phoenix/Mesa area looks pretty darn good to us. But still I wanted to hear from some people who live there or know it well.

1. How is crime in the city? I can’t find much info outside of statistics, not much in the way of first hand tellings.

2. What kind of work is there in Mesa or the surrounding areas, considering I have a solid history with anything construction, landscaping, etc.?

3. Is the area bicycle or runner friendly?

4. Are there neighborhoods or areas that are suggested over another for two people in their mid-20s who aren’t much into partying at all, and would be happier in a more quiet and safer living area?

Suntan answers:

Arizona is a wonderful place.

Low crime in the east valley (Mesa/Gilbert), EXTREMELY family friendly and plenty to do if you aren’t into the party scene. I’m 25, have lived in NY for several months, Miami for a few years, Texas for a few years and in Cali for a summer and I always go back to Arizona. Where else can you (in only a matter of hours) get from your house to the beach, or to the mountains to snowboard, or to another country (Mexico), or to the sandunes in the desert, or to Vegas, or to a lush forest, or to the red rocks of Sedona, or to the grand canyon or to multiple lakes/states…?? Anyone who say it’s boring is crazy.

Congrats and good luck!!! :)
