Your Questions About Landscape Architecture Jobs In Canada

Thursday, June 9th, 2011 by Suntan

Ruth asks…

I’m hoping to study landscape architecture next year, can you help me with some questions?

Well, I’m not actually studying a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, the course is called Bachelor of Arts in Landscape (but it gives the credentials to become a landscape architect).

My first question is (1) do you think there will be much difference between the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Bachelor of Arts in Landscape?

My second question is; (2) if I work really hard through uni and get good marks, what are my chances of working overseas (In England or maybe some part of America or Canada) after I complete the degree?

(3) I have the option to study a double degree with Bachelor of Arts in Landscape and Bachelor of Environmental Science, do you think I should study the double degree even though I don’t really like science?

My last two questions are just general about the profession,

(4) Does the whole company design a project together or do you take on individual jobs?

(5) What’s the proportion of inside to outside work in the job? How much time will be spent inside the office compared to out on site?

You don’t have to answer every question if you don’t know the answer, thanks in advance.

Suntan answers:

I will try to address ?’s # 4 & #5.

#4. I think it may vary according to how a particular company is run, and how big it is. I used to do landscape design and installation for new construction and rework existing landscapes. I was a very small outfit, by choice, and I did everything myself, with one person helping with labor. I did the designs, drew the plans, made the purchases, and worked on the job. But I never did things like a lot of hardscape or huge materials, although there were times I had to hire a crane. If the business is big enough to need specialists in different aspects of the job (design, irrigation, hardscape, site prep, etc.), then there could be that division of labor. But either way, there should be one person with the ultimate authority over the whole operation on any job, like a general contractor does for construction. Maybe this is a no-brainer, sorry if it is.

#5. Once again, I see the potential for much variability. How much time do you intend to spend with a client, determining tastes and goals for the job? That can take a lot of time, but it can really pay off in customer satisfaction. Can a design come together quickly for you, or do you take a lot of time to do that? How much labor help will you have? More hands make the job go faster, but are also harder to watch over all at once. Whatever the answer to these questions, and many others, each job will be different as to the balance of in and out times.

This is not the kind of work you can just put in a box and know what to expect. But it’s a great job to do. You get to be creative, work with your brain and your hands, and enjoy making something beautiful. I wish you success.

Daniel asks…

What on Earth do I do?

First of all, I live in Canada.
My passion is interior design, architecture, landscape architecture/design, etc. Stuff like I that. I just love a breathtaking sight/space/atmosphere and I would love to do this and be surrounded and exposed to this aspect in my future.

However, I also want to live in the United States…badly. My dream job is not in high demand there, but health care is…and I have no interest on doing anything in the heath care industry.

That is my problem.

As a 10th grader, I need to think about what I want to do and where I want to be in the future. I want be an interior designer/architect in the States…which I feel is highly unlikely. But there is no way that I will stay in Canada, and no way that I would be happy being a doctor/nurse/you get the point. Yet, I want BOTH very much, equally.

Should I focus on my love architecture, you should I focus on taking all 3 sciences in grade 11 for better opportunities to get into the U.S. What do I focus on?

Suntan answers:

Wow! Are any of the science classes in areas which would also help your true interests? For example Botany class would go along well with your landscape design interest. A drafting or CAD ( computer assisted drawing) class woud be reasonable to take. Finally, a pre engineering class ight be useful as well if you get into designing buildings, sculptures etc.
