Michael asks…

Would this be a good…. Movie Cartoon or Book?

There is a young pretty girl in her late teens who works at a lesure swimming pool as a lifeguard. She desperatley needs some new sneakers as her current one are very worn down, but currently dosen’t have the money for some new ones. After a long day at the baths, she walks home from the pool and when walking down a dark alley, she see’s a pair of neatly placed new sneakers in the middle of the narrow alley facing her. She stares directly at them and by coninsedence they are the designer ones she wanted. But afraid by the dark she steps over them and carrys on walking. Later that night she regrets not picking them up as shese got to put up with her old ones which have holes in them at work. The next day she was on her way to work and was walking down the alley, When she saw the sneakers. This time she didn’t hesitate and grabbed them and put them in her sports bag. When she arrived, at her locker she kicked off her old sneakers and pulled out the ones she had found. There wasn’t nothing special about them, they seemed in very good condition with slight wear on the inner soles. They where neatly laced and there tongues where slightly pointing up. With out looking at even the size she just slipped them on. She wore them barefoot and they where comfy and fitted perfect. She threw her old ones in her locker as spares, then went by the pool. She was one of the last persons around the pool as she had to prepare the pool for the next day. It had been a hot long day, so she slipped off her sneakers and left them beside the pool and began stacking up the deck chairs. Suddenly she heard a noise coming from her sneakers like a choking noise. She looked at them from a distance away and they where both shuddering and shaking. She walked over to them and looked in there throats. She screamed in horror as they where coughing up blood from the insides of them. They started getting violant, blood started coming out of the shoes and splattering on the floor, then all of a sudden all the blood disappeared into the shoes. The girl began to run. Then the sneakers tied themselves, there tongues sprung up and began to chase the girl down by the pool. The girl slipped onto her back and the shoes slipped themselves onto her feet and began to tie so tight her ankles began to go slightly purple. The sneakers forced her back onto her feet and dragged her to the deep end of the pool. The girl was in a state breaking into tears. The shoes went over the edge of the pool and teased her, until the shoes lifted of there heels and into the pool. On the desent one of the shoes laces untied and tied itself onto the ladder, The whole pool filled with blood which was gushing out the air holes of the sneakers. The girl struggled to get up to surface, but the shoe wouldn’t let go of the ladder. Eventually she drowned and the shoe untied itself and the body rose to the surface of the blood filled pool. The shoes freed themselves from her feet, rose to the surface and got out the pool. They shook like a wet dog spalttering the wall with dotches of blood. They stared at the body for a couple of seconds before walking off leaving a prints of blood. The story continues as other people find the shoes until one day somebody destroys them.

Good grief!
Are you related to Stephen King or Dean Koontz?

Not a cartoon – I do not associate such terror and gore with cartoons.
Definitely a book.

That story would totally freak me out, but at the same time I’d read every word (probably twice).

Laura asks…

Need Unwanted Pool Ideas?

Pool Picture:

it’s very deep for some serious diving.
My wife can’t swim.
My dogs can’t swim.
So if i go swimming and start to drown then no one can save me.
upkeep would be a small fortune.

It would cost from $2000 to $8000 to fill it in (prob closer to $8000 due to the depth and no way to get a dump truck in the back yard – or even one of those 1-man cat-bulldozer things. just wheel barrels)

can’t turn it into a pond because of city code and mosquito fears from the city.

What if i build some kind of a room into it?

here’s what i’m thinking and someone give me some feedback or point me toward a link.
1 – put about 12 inches of dirt and gravel in the bottom and level it out.
2 – put a deck on top of that. the deck anchored to stone blocks that are sitting about 6 inches in the dirt.
3 – put multiple support beams up.
4 – put a 2nd water proof deck on top of the support beams. wall from top to bottom with dirt on all sides. (wood walling)
5 – put about 12 inches of dirt on top of that.
6 – plant grass, install door with a ladder or folding stairs, use existing pool electrical for lighting.

There would be 12 inches of dirt & rock in the bottom in case water gets in – it won’t just puddle on the ‘floor’ and will help to soak up the water till it evaporates.
Water evaporates fast in this part of Arizona. very dry. but the rainy season can be up to 3 inches of rain in one burst.
“The annual average precipitation at Buckeye is 7.91 Inches. Rainfall in is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. The wettest month of the year is August with an average rainfall of 1.22 Inches.”

the supports would be anchored on the lower deck well and prop up the upper deck.
i figure i’d build the walling with 2×4′s about 8 inches apart sandwiched between thick plywood.

In the end it will look like a sidewalk around a grassy knoll that you can walk on except for a small ventilation fan with a grate over it.

I’m still wondering about drainage, though.

What do you think? possible? suggestions?

Suntan answers:

It sounds exciting and well worth a try. Water could be a problem but pools are waterproofed and usually have a rise so water should not flow in but unfortunately you do have to plan for the problem of a bigger than average rainfall so good luck. Perhaps have an open-able roof so if things do get a bit damp you could open it to dry. A games room would be good….darts, table tennis…..things that do not get rusty or affected by damp…..wine cellar, cocktail bar, workout area ….all a lot more useful than a pool.

James asks…

What are some funny things your Dachshund does?

Name some funny things that your Dachshund does. Include what type (Mini, Standard etc)

Send me funny photos of your Dachshund. My email address is on the website.

I send the following a while back to my Dachshund Club about my boy Pickles. http://www.southjerseydachshundclub.com/index.htm

Yawns like a person complete with yawning noises. Starting at about 9:30 PM or just before I put him in for the night he is Mr. Yawny!

Knows what “There is someone to bark at” means. I say that if we are outside. He looks up and charges full speed at the fence line to bark as whoever is walking by.

When he runs full speed like above he is mostly crooked. I say he looks like his butt is trying to pass his head!

Has to chew his very abrasive Nylabone on a part of our bare skin. He seeks it out! That does not last for very long.

Knows the drop and roll maneuver very well for belly rubs to total strangers. Once he was outside, ran at full speed and slid in the leaves sideways and stopped right at my feet with belly up in belly rub position. I could not stand up I was laughing so much.

Absolutely loves being in the snow even when it was well above his head.

Has really taken to kicking up lots of grass and usually a jump or 2 at the end after doing his business, 1 or 2…

Gets really annoyed and yipes loudly when he is playing with another dog in our yard that is faster than him. Sammy is a Pug that Pickles plays with VERY well. Sammy can leave him in the dust. Pickles is not happy with that.

Burrows under the blankets in bed. The more tangled he gets the happier he is.

He sniffs into the wind. His ears flap like the an elephant! I don’t think he will take flight though…..

Climbs up on the back of a couch and sleeps there like most cats would.

Likes to get a bath and run around the house without his shirt on to dry.

Follows the sun on the carpet in the morning when he is lounging & sleeping

Wants us to throw a ball for him but does not want to give it to us. He wants to see what we will do to get it from him! He also does not always bring it back to me.

Doesn’t mind swimming with us if the water is warm. He sits on his raft. When he is tired of that he swims across the pool and climbs up the ladder to chill out on the deck.

Pickles has a bit of a licking habit. He really likes licking my forehead AKA “The Great Baldini”.

If we are in the house and he thinks he is going out he walks ahead of us and looks back every few steps to see if we are still following him.

He pretty much ONLY turns & spins counter clockwise.

Pickles LOVES cheese & boiled chicken. I take the zip bag of cheese out of the refrigerator. He jumps and bonks himself in the head with the cheese bag. It does not stop him for a second.

He likes to go in the car. I frequently take him with me on errands like the bank if I don’t have to get out of the car. He knows when you jump on my lap so the teller can see him and he gets a treat.

A photo would be better for this but….. I sit with the recliner foot rest up and my legs bent. Pickles pushes backwards to rest on my legs and sits straight up – all just to get belly rubs. The first time he did this my legs were flat out. He did a slow fall backwards like a tree going TIMBER!

He play digs on the bed and couch but really never digs outside (Luckily!)

Sandy asks…

I want to become a lifeguard?

I live on long island and im turning 15 this december I was wondering what type of training I need to do before the red cross course thingy.
(this is what u havta do)
2) Swim 300 yards continuously; using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick; 100 yards of breast stroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence; and 100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke. These 100 yards may be a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke. (Note: There is no time requirement for this skill. The participant must show only that he or she can swim 300 yards using the above strokes without stopping.)

3) Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. (NOTE: When returning to the starting point, the participant must hold the 10-pound object with both hands, placing the brick on his or her chest, and must keep his or her face above the water.) The participant can swim on his or her back using an elementary backstroke kick, flutter kick or a rotary (eggbeater) kick. The participant must exit the water using his or her strength. The time is complete once the participant has exited the water and is standing up on the pool deck. The purpose of the timed event is to ensure that the participant demonstrates comfort in the water along with enough speed, strength and endurance to perform a combination of basic skills that are required and built upon throughout the course.

So i run cross country and Im in generally good shape except im not spectacular at swimming.
So how much do I have to swim to be able to do the above?

Suntan answers:

You have to be able to swim the 340 yards-as set above. However, the training for the competition should always be harder than the competition itself. When i train for triathlons, I only need to swim 750m, but I usually swim up to 3 km in one hour. You need to buuld your stamina, in the three strokes, so consider swimming 3-5 minutes at a fast pace, with 2 minutes gentle swimming afterwards, 3-5 times. Do this in all 3 strokes, in one swim session. For the next section of your session, practise their drill. The section for part 2 will help with swimming to the object, but when at the object, you need to be able to swim with just a kick. Choose one of the kick’s mentioned above (which ever one suites you best-try all 3), then practise it. Alternate between holding a weight on your chest, just lying in the required position and kicking, using flippers and using a float.

Because you are 15, you can probably train these up enough in about a year or two. I managed to train those skills up for triathlon in 6-8 months, training about 3 times per week, so you should manage to do it fairly easily. Good luck, and thanks for choosing to become a lifeguard.

Lisa asks…

Does he like me or is he just messing around?

Ok, I have a best guy friend that lives in another state. We went to visit our friends and family this past summer as normal. We spent the night (his sis, my sis, me and him) at his house. It was like mid-night and his sis and my sis were messing around upstairs and we were lying on the floor downstairs next to each other. He starts poking me in the elbow and then I poke him back and it’s like a chain reaction. I roll away and he comes after me trying to poke me.

Then the next day we went swimming in his neighbors pool and we were messing around again. When I was trying to get off of the ladder he runs off the deck and jumps over my head. And that is also a chain reaction. I jump over him, he jumps over me over and over again.

Then when we get clothes on we play hide and seek, he was counting in the hall near his stairs and I ran down the hall past him and he kicked me and me and him started laughing.

Then I hid in their “work room” we call it (where they keep their decorations and stuff.) We found a empty wrapping paper roll and started fighting like star wars. Then he hit me in the arm really hard and I dropped the roll and held my arm. He dropped his and came over to see if I was ok and he kept saying how sorry he was and stuff.

So does he like me?? I kinda like him now! But IDK if he likes me! So what do you think?
I have known him 4ever!

Suntan answers:

Maybe. Or maybe not. Don’t jump ahead into conclusions. Do things slowly and wisely.
