Your Questions About Porch Enclosures

Sandy asks…

What are some alternatives to screen for a porch enclosure?

So, I have a screen porch attached to my house. The problem is that I’d like my cats to be able to spend some time out there, but I’m afraid they will claw through the screen and escape. I don’t want them to be indoor/outdoor cats because that’s just too much trouble, especially with the stray cat population around my house. So, I’m looking for an alternative that I could possibly replace the screen with or maybe even reinforce the screen. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Suntan answers:

Check for the pet screen kit on google. But I know they have it at improvementscatalog.com

And you might want to put something decorative, over some of the area, like lattice – in plastic, it comes in all kinds of colors now and you can get it at home improvement stores. But if your cats have claws they may try to climb it (cut it will save your screens if it is a small weave lattice

George asks…

Ideas on how to advertise for screen enclosures?

I live in central florida & as people who live here know, we need screen to block us from bugs & keep the pools clean from leaves, etc.

I work at a place that builds custom screen enclosures, porches, & garage screen doors.

I need to find a new way to advertise because business is slow. Any ideas? (I have already tried yellowpages, newspapers, radio ads).
We have tried the “beat other prices”, but someone is under selling everyone! (They promise to do work for less than what it costs us to buy the materials alone!!!). We are trying to figure out who this is because the few companies that have been around for years (includung us), are losing business to these fly-by-night companies under selling everyone! In about 3-4 months or so, the SAME PEOPLE will call back because the “fake companies” messed up & the homeowner can’t find them. Well, we are in a slow period now & are selling our work as low as we possible can. We just need some way to let people know that they need to go with a company with a proven record of quality!

Suntan answers:

I’d go with the idea that the enclosure also keeps out small critters and insects (squirrels, flies, etc.) and allows ones house pets to enjoy the outside without being vulnerable to other feral cats and dogs.

If that doesn’t work, offer to undersell your competitors by ten percent.

Carol asks…

How do I get rid of a skunk living in an enclosure under my porch and stop it from coming back?

Suntan answers:

Bait a live trap with some dry cat food and set it out near your porch.
Contact animal control after the skunk has been trapped. Remember that skunks can carry rabies; do not handle a trap with a skunk in it. Also, do not shoot the skunk or use a spring-type trap as it might spray reflexively.

Lizzie asks…

How do I get better adhesion of porch & deck paint?

I have an enclosed porch with a cement deck. The enclosure is not weather tight. Its a screened in room with a roof. So humidity and temperature are an issue in the summer. The paint never seems to adhere well, regardless of the precautions taken to prepare the surface and ensure that the paint is applied in low humidity conditions in warmer temperatures. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I’m in the northeast USA and have access to Home Depot and Lowe’s as well as other specialty retailers.
I wonder if you have neutralize after applying the acid and before applying the paint?

Suntan answers:

Make sure your surface is clean. But maybe it is time to switch over to a different paint if your having so much problems.

A epoxy surface sounds like it would fit your needs nicely. Rustoleum makes a kit to do the job.
