David asks…
What is the best cover for a deck?Sunsetter awnings?
It is a 12 x 8 deck with french doors and wood rails.Need a cover for the deck Which is cheaper?

Suntan answers:
I’m sure the sunsetter is cheaper to put up, comes manual and motorized…and has a 5 yr warranty on it……
But building a cover for your porch will add value to your home and i think over the long run more economical…get family and friends to help you to DIY and build it cheaper….we built ours for under 2000 and took us 2 weekends(well friday after work till sunday evening) and 6 people, the guys did the heavy work and we sanded and painted, BBQed and kept the guy’s hydrated….it’s 12×10 last 2 ft is lattice and in spring & summer i have jasmine growing all over the top of the lattice
)

Sharon asks…
How much should I pay for someone to make me a 12X32 deck and awning?

Suntan answers:
It depends on where you live. Prices will vary from area to area. Call around to different contractors. Pricing should come from a free estimate. Get it in writing as well!
Good luck!

Mark asks…
Is a retractable awning or wood louvered “ceiling” less expensive for a deck?
We have a 10′ x 20′ deck that faces west and gets HOT (Colorado). Would it be less expensive to get a retractable fabric awning or have someone build a wood lattice roof?

Suntan answers:
I’m pretty sure a retractable awning would be less expensive….plus on cool nights you can retract it and still enjoy the night sky!

Sandra asks…
I have an awning that goes over my deck. What can I use to stop birds from building nests?
Last year I had to put so much plastic and screen material up on the awning that I couldn’t use it.

Suntan answers:
Did you try putting up a plastic owl

Linda asks…
I want to put an awning over my deck. I have a chimney that comes out about 24″ is there a way to do this?

Suntan answers:
I am assuming that the chimney runs up the outside wall and extends above where you are starting the awning. You can still attach the awning to the wall, you will have to custom cut and fit the awning around the chimney. There are specific anchors for brick and cement. (lead anchors, require a masonry bit for your drill). A little extra work, but the awning should not be effected by the heat of the chimney, as most goes up out the top. Wish I could draw you a picture. Sorry.
