Your Questions About Deck Awnings

William asks…

no privacy here on our deck?

we have a average size deck that we use quite a lot in the spring in-till fall…but its like being in a fish bowl..no privacy from neighbors.i was thinking to have posts placed on the top of the rail that our removable and have a duck cloth or shade cloth that i can slip over the posts..i can control where i want the privacy and option to have no privacy if desired.. i don’t know where to begin..we have a sewing machine..never used it..this is all theory..an awning company would cost mega bucks and want a cost effective privacy barrier..u think i can do this along…never used a saw ,sewing machine,or drill but determined..please advise..

Suntan answers:

When you are outside first your neighbors come out to stare at you? Maybe you should go to your room and not do that outside. They are watching you staring back at them. Your neighbors probably feel the same way. Give them some privacy. LOL The question is how much is your privacy worth? Good luck with your project here is another option.

I remember being young and having no tools or privacy
The hardest part of your project may be the sewing. Use grommets and tie the cloth to the poles.
Your project should not be too hard for you but it may be more expensive than ready made products.
For a beginner corded drills are cheaper starting around $40 dollars.
Hand saws are a lot of work.
Circle saw starts at $89.
Treated 4x4x8 = $8.97 each Lowe’s
2x4x8 = $3.75 each fence supply

David asks…

retractable awning or build covering roof?

We have a large deck but the sun is too much on us. What are pros/cons of a awning vs building a roof to cover. What is average price difference?

Suntan answers:

Awnings are cheaper, but can be a real pain. First look for the type that does not have the side arms because believe me people walk into them, but that limits the span of the coverage. Building a permanent cover requires some maintenance depending on what type you build. Ours needs to be painted every few years and we live in termite country so we watch for wood rot and moisture damage making certain to treat it right away to discourage them. But, you can get away with power washing the permanent structure which is a disaster with an awning. We had to take ours down, spread it out on the driveway and wash it now and again because it got grungy looking and even though the company told us it would not mildew, leaves stain it and water discolored it and it started to fade after 5-6 years. I’m a lot happier with the permanent structure, it cost abut $1500 to build and the awning was smaller and cost around $1000

Donna asks…

I have drainage pipes covered with rocks all the way around my patio. It’s ugly & don’t like walking on rocks

Okay so I have a patio with an awning over it. The water runs off the awning and there are drainage pipes around the patio with rocks covering them. The black stuff that holds the rocks in is coming up and you have to step over it to get in the yard. And the rocks are hard on the feet. First we wanted a deck, but $3000 we do not have. What can we do about these rocks? and drainage? and walking over them? any ideas?

Suntan answers:

Those rocks covering drainage pipes are probably a French Drain. That is an important part of your home’s drainage system and is keeping your basement/patio/foundation dry.

Why not put steeping stones as a trail among the rocks to walk on to get to your yard?

Sandra asks…

need to replace aluminum patio awning ?

What is the cost to replace a 8×16 aluminum patio awning?

The cost I have been getting is way out of line with what the insurance will pay.

The awning is W-Pan, will be resting on a deck.

Where would a person buy one to install it themselves?

Suntan answers:

Fairly simple to build yourself,,,,
