Your Questions About Backyard Designs On A Budget

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 by Suntan

Richard asks…

What to do about future in-laws taking over wedding planning?

My Fiance’s family is really obnoxious and in each others’ business all the time. We just recently got engaged (10 days or so) and have set our wedding date for Oct 20, 2012. I have done some initial planning and we have set a very formal theme. However, my fiance’s family, including his mother, grandmother (who hates me), and aunts I’ve never met are all making decisions for us about reception venues, food, how our cake will look etc. It’s very frustrating because they are taking away this experience from us. They really want us to get married in the Catholic church and have me convert (but I really don’t want to and my Fiance is fine with that). They are also trying to turn it into some kind of backyard barbeque with enchiladas and other types of mexican food (we live in New Mexico but I really don’t like mexican food and would prefer not to have it at our wedding). I want to have a late evening wedding so we don’t have to provide a full meal (we’re college students on a limited budget) I would just like to have desserts and snacks. They also want to have the reception at my fiance’s grandparents house (which I hate the idea of). We’re having 130 guests and it simply won’t work. Finally, I told my future mother-in-law our colors for the wedding and she started making all these designs for our cake without even consulting me. I know it sounds petty, but I really want my Fiance and me to plan the wedding, not everyone else. How do I approach this gently without creating further tension? This is a once in a lifetime thing and I don’t want to be unhappy on my wedding day because other people made my decisions. If you have a similar story or any suggestions please share.

Suntan answers:

So stop sharing what you are doing with them.

If they dont know, they cant change it.

Book things without them.

math:please help with Landscape Design homework?

1.You are planning to spend no less than $3,000 and no more than $8,000 on your landscaping project.
a.Write an inequality that demonstrates how much money you will are willing to spend on the project.

b.For the first phase of the project, imagine you want to cover the backyard with decorative rock and plant some trees. You need 35 tons of rock to cover the area. If each ton costs $60 and each tree is $99, what is the maximum number of trees you can buy with a budget of $2,400? Write an inequality that illustrates the problem and solve. Express your answer as an inequality and explain how you arrived at your answer.

c.Would four trees be a solution to the inequality in Part b? Justify your answer.

2. The coordinate graph of the backyard shows the location of the trees, plants, patio, and utility lines. If necessary, you may copy and paste the image to another document and enlarge it.
a. What are the coordinates of Tree A, Plant B, Plant C, Patio D, Plant E, and Plant F?
b. The water line is given by the equation

Imagine you want to put a pink flamingo lawn ornament in your backyard. You want to avoid placing it directly over the water line in case you need to excavate the line for repairs in the future.
Could you place it at the point (6,-15)? [Support your answer with algebra work.]

b.What is the slope and y-intercept of the line in Part b? How do you know?

c.Imagine you want to add a sprinkler system and the location of one section of the sprinkler line can be described by the equation

Complete the table for this equation. [Support your answer with algebra work.]

Suntan answers:

The first answer you will 35 tons of rock x 60$ = $2,1000. You have $2,4000 – $2,1000 = $3000.
3000 /99 = 30.3 trees.????
Write an inequality $3,000<$8,000.

http://www.algebra.com/algebra/

This is how it is done,
Let # of trees be "x"
3000<= 35*60 + 99 x < = 8000
900 < = 99x < = 5900
9.09 < x <= 59.596
# of trees is between 8 and 59

How many trees can you buy out of a budget of $24,000
35*60 + 99x <= 24,000
99x <= 21900

x= 3000
x <= 8000
Budget = 24,000
rocks = $60*35 = 2100
tree = (x-2100)/99 truncated to the nearest integer that is less than that value.

Ruth asks…

Help with algebra…?

Landscape designers often use coordinate geometry and algebra as they help their clients. In many regions, landscape design is a growing field. With the increasing popularity of do-it-yourself television shows, many homeowners are becoming amateur landscape artists.

Imagine you are a homeowner getting ready to sell your home. You realize there are some landscaping problems you want to address so your home will sell quickly and you can get the best price. After making this decision, you realize there are many things to consider when landscaping the backyard, such as bud

Answer the following questions. Use Equation Editor to write mathematical expressions and equations. First, save this file to your hard drive by selecting Save As from the File menu. Click the white space below each question to maintain proper formatting.

1.You are planning to spend no less than $6,000 and no more than $10,000 on your landscaping project.

PART 1
You are planning to spend no less than $7,000 and no more than $12,000 on your landscaping Project.
1.Write an inequality that demonstrates how much money you will be willing to spend on the project. (2 pts)

2.Suppose you want to cover part of the backyard with decorative rock and plant some trees as the first phase of the project. You need 42 tons of rock to cover the area. Each ton cost $65 and each tree is $89, write an inequality to show the maximum amount of money you can spend on trees with a budget of $3,400 for Phase 1. (2 pts) Show your work using equation editor. (1 pt)

3.What is the maximum number of trees that you can buy without going over your budget? (1 pt) Show your work using equation editor and answer in a complete sentence. (1 pt)

Michael asks…

can anyone help me with this pretty pleasee? :) ?

Samantha wants to have an ice rink built in her backyard. In order to do this, she must:

hire someone with landscaping equipment to level her backyard. This costs $2.50 per square metre.
flood the rink with enough water to form ice to a depth of 12 centimetres. As water freezes, the volume of ice formed is about 1.1 times the volume of the water. The price of water is $2.10 per 1000 litres. Note: 1 m3 = 1000 litres.
paint the ice with ice paint that costs $8.99 per litre. One litre covers eight square metres.
allow $65 for miscellaneous materials she will need to buy.
pay PST and GST, both at 7 percent, for all materials, and only 7 percent GST for labour (having the yard landscaped).
pay her children for flooding the rink. Water flows through the garden hose at 20 litres per minute, and the children insist on receiving $3.50 per hour for flooding. Samantha pays no PST or GST on this expense.
Samantha has a budget of $400 to build this rink. Determine the maximum-size rink she can build for that amount. What would be a suitable shape of rink for her to design? What are the dimensions of the shape you suggest?

She has never had a rink in her backyard before, and she needs your advice about anything related to this project. What are some other things (expenses, design features, safety concerns, et cetera) that Samantha needs to be aware of if she has an ice rink in her backyard?

Suntan answers:

I hope I have everything included so you need to check the accuracy but here is the method I adopted, hope that helps.
Leveling
Labor & Equipment $2.50 + 7% = $2.675 per sm
___________________________________________________________________________
Cost of water @ $2.10 per 1000 liters which is also $2.10 per m³ + 14% tax = $2.394 per m³

Childrens labor

1000 litres/ 20 litres/ min = 50 minutes

50 mins at $3.50 per hour = $2.916 per 1000 litres or m³

Therefore total cost of water = $2.394 + $2.916 +$5.31 per m³

Since water bulks by 1.1 times by volume
the cost of water per m³ of ice = $5.31/110*100 = $5.01 per m³ of ice

For 12 cm of ice the cost of water is $0.60 per sm
_________________________________________________________

Ice paint costs = 8.99 + 14% tax per litre at a coverage rate of 8 sm per litre
therefore paint costs 10.24/8 = $1.28 per sm

Total Budget $400 less miscellaneous materials = $335

_____________________________________________________________________
Total Cost per sm $2.675+$0.60+$1.28 = $4.555/ sm divided into $355 = 73.54 sm

I’d recommend an oval shape as you can’t skate in corners :)

Lizzie asks…

I am having a candyland themed wedding and i need help with decorations, so its fun, but it looks great. Help!

My wedding/reception is in a huge big backyard and I need help with decorations we are doing (think original Chocolate Factory when they first walk in to the candy wonderland). I have my grand entrance designed that the guest will walk into. I have 4 ft balloons that will be strung high as large lollipops, and normal sized balloons on the lollipop sticks to go in the ground as smaller lollipops. i have awesome punching balloons (i’ve cut off the rubber handles) that will float around as gum drops. i have pvc piping that were turned into extra large light lollipops with laterns on top that frame out the back of the reception area, where the head table will be). already have table clothes coved, dresses coved, all the giant stuff what i’m missing is the small details that will pull this off so it doesn’t look bad and half done. I don’t have a giant budget but i do have a lot of help and a lot skill. Please help with your constructive suggestions.
We actually are having a chocolate river its more of a “c” to look like it is beyond where the wedding is and just curved in for a visit…..i did a demo one last weekend to make sure it would work.
you guys are so awesome! the mushroom idea is great we were trying to figure out how to make something like that…..

as for center pieces i’m still working on that one, as usual there is lots of debate and ideas…just none that are working for me….on each table (because its small – it can’t be the centerpiece) but we have candy/food games…. ready set spaghetti, candyland, h.h. hippos pizza party, i even found a willy wonka board game, and an awesome zombie fast food card game.

as for people that think i should grow up…i am, and i’m a mom… i’ve been with my fiance along time we have a famiy… both families are fun, we wanted to do something exiting and different, something that was crazy and us. this is perfect…. my flower girl and brides maids are even walking down the aisle to the peanuts theme song. it may not be traditional, but tradition is not for everyone..marriage is for people mature.. it does not mean that have to be void of imagination and creativity

Suntan answers:

Ok, here are a few suggestions that you might consider utilizing:

Put candy kisses in bowls on the tables

Add some lollipops to the flowers – table arrangements, bouquets, boutonnieres, etc

Have a Fondue bar with different kinds of chocolates and fruits for dipping

That’s all I can think of for now….if I think of anything else, I’ll post it later.

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! =)
